MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 10

Justin Verlander, New York Mets – UNDER 6.0 Strikeouts

Sometimes with MLB data, the smaller and recent sample sizes paint a much different picture than season-long numbers. That’s the case with the Cincinnati Reds and their strikeout rates. The Reds have a 24% K rate overall this year, which is the 8th-highest mark in the MLB. Over the past two weeks, though, Cincy is striking out just 20.1% of the time (7th-lowest). Against right-handed pitching over the past two weeks, that K rate is down to 19.8% (5th-lowest). This offense has become a much tougher matchup for opposing pitchers lately. Plus, the Reds boast a .331 wOBA and 9.1% walk rate at home in the hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park this season.

All of this is to say that Justin Verlander’s strikeouts could be limited on the road tonight. The veteran right-hander struck out five over five innings in his 2023 and New York Mets debut last week. It was an up-and-down outing with two homers and five hits allowed. He also threw just 79 pitches before exiting, which may be a continuing theme tonight and early this season as the Mets try to keep Verlander healthy as he’s recovering from a shoulder injury – especially with Max Scherzer getting scratched yesterday.

Sean Murphy, Atlanta Braves – OVER 0.5 Singles

Considering the Boston Red Sox vs Atlanta Braves game has a hefty over/under of 10 total runs, we could go with a few different player props here. Let’s focus on Sean Murphy, who’s rolling at the plate right now. The Braves catcher is batting .364 over the past seven games and .353 over the past 15 contests. He also has six multi-hit games since the calendar turned to May. Murphy and the dangerous Atlanta lineup will face Red Sox starter Bryan Bello, who has a 5.71 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in four outings this season. Bello has allowed 24 hits over his 17.1 innings pitched thus far. Once Bello leaves the game, the shaky Boston bullpen isn’t much better with a 4.63 FIP over the past two weeks. Banking on a singles prop is definitely risky, but Murphy should have success swinging the bat tonight.
