MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks June 14

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers – OVER 7.5 Strikeouts

When Clayton Kershaw pitches at home, he reaches a new level of dominance that few other big-league arms can match. The Los Angeles Dodgers veteran has been shutting down opposing lineups at home for 15 strong years now and that trend has been even more evident later in his career. This season, Kershaw is sporting a 1.45 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in five home starts with 43 strikeouts over 31 innings. Compare that to his 3.97 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 50 K’s in 45.1 innings on the road. Last year, Kershaw punched out 80 batters in 64 innings at home compared to just 57 K’s in 64.1 road innings. The Dodgers’ southpaw has been over 7.5 strikeouts in four of five home starts this season with nine K’s in each. The only time he didn’t go over this prop was when he struck out seven in just four innings vs the Twins. Tonight, Kershaw will face a Chicago White Sox offense that’s striking out a ton against left-handed pitching. The White Sox have an MLB-worst 32.7% K rate vs southpaws over the past two weeks and are among the bottom 10 teams in the league in season-long K rate vs lefties. It’s a high number, but bank on Kershaw to strike out at least eight tonight.

Ben Lively, Cincinnati Reds – OVER 4.5 Strikeouts

When looking at strikeout props tonight, Ben Lively admittedly isn’t the first name that comes to mind. Even so, we’re still targeting his K’s because this line is a tad too low. Lively has been over 4.5 strikeouts in all five of his starts this season since joining the Cincinnati Reds rotation in mid-May. He’s also punched out eight batters in three of those outings. The key thing with Lively is that the Reds are letting him go deep into games as he’s pitched into the seventh inning or later in three of his last four starts with 100+ pitches in two of those. That might be the case again tonight after Luke Weaver and Brandon Williamson both didn’t last past the fifth inning in the first two games of this series vs the Kansas City Royals. The Cincy bullpen has seen a lot of work over the past week or so and Lively is here to eat innings. That has subsequently raised his strikeout upside. As for tonight’s matchup, the Royals’ 24.5% K rate vs right-handed pitching this season is the 5th-worst mark in the league. Though the lineup has been better against righties lately (21.5% K rate over the past two weeks), we’re still leaning on Lively’s track record this season.

Kody Clemens, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 0.5 Hits

If you watched the Bettor Sports Betting show yesterday, you also cashed on this as Kody Clemens smacked a double to go over his hits prop. Well, we’re running it back because the numbers are pointing us in that direction. Clemens has been a sneaky MLB DFS play and source for MLB player props lately when in the Philadelphia Phillies lineup. The utility player is hitting .318 over his past seven games and .292 over the past 15 contests. If you look at his game logs, you’ll notice Clemens has hit safely in seven straight starts and 13 of his past 16 games started. The Phillies offense is hot right now and Clemens is quietly racking up hits towards the bottom of the lineup. Tonight’s matchup vs Arizona Diamondbacks righthander Merrill Kelly is a tougher one, but there’s some upside here. Kelly’s 3.90 xERA and 3.74 FIP are much higher than his 2.92 ERA and it means some negative regression could be coming. Plus, Clemens is hitting .278 vs righty pitching this season.
