Chase Burns MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 6.5 Strikeouts

The breakout season for Chase Burns is off and rolling. The Cincinnati Reds’ young flamethrower boasts a 2.20 ERA over his first seven starts, and he just tossed seven scoreless innings against the Pirates. Let’s back him to keep it going and tally plenty of strikeouts on Saturday. 

Much of Burns’ success is due to his elite swing-and-miss stuff. He owns a 34.8% whiff rate, which ranks in the 95th MLB percentile, leading to a 28.6% strikeout rate (85th percentile). The Cincy right-hander has also struck out seven or more batters in five of his seven starts so far. 

Burns now faces a Houston Astros lineup that’s been prone to the strikeout lately. The ‘Stros have a league-high 31.4% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching over the past week. Over the past two weeks, they have a 24.4 Al Williams% K rate (6th-highest in MLB) with just a 5.7% walk rate (third-lowest). It’s an ideal matchup for Burns to rack up strikeouts.

 

 

 

🙂 Trey Yesavage MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 5.5 Strikeouts

The Los Angeles Angels have been a team to target for opposing pitchers and their strikeout totals all season. That’s especially true for right-handers against the lineup. We’ll gladly do it again today with Trey Yesavage on the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays. 

Yesavage has looked sharp in his two starts since returning from an early-season injury. The Jays’ right-hander has allowed just one run over 9.1 combined innings. He also struck out six in his latest outing. That’s a good sign for a guy who showed off his strikeout potential last year in limited action. 

Notably, Yesavage’s pitch count should continue to rise today. He threw only 74 pitches in his first outing of the season, and then 82 in his second start. Toronto will likely let him go for 90+ pitches today, which can possibly get him to six innings. That’ll certainly help the strikeout number. 

As for the Angels, they have a league-high 26.0% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this year. Over the past week, the K rate is even higher at 27.2%, which ranks third-worst in the majors during this stretch. The LAA offense also has just a .203 batting average (28th in MLB) and 6.4% walk rate (27th) vs. righties over the last week. Yesavage can take advantage of this matchup and keep the Angels’ bats quiet.
