DFS Lineup Construction Thoughts

We are now over a week into the season and our data is growing each and every day. We have a better idea of who is hot or cold at the plate and just a lot more numbers to base picks off of.  We have a nice sized 8-game slate on tap today with some of the early games being excluded. We have three clear pitchers at the top in Max Scherzer, Luis Castillo, and Julio Urias. We have Coors Field on the slate and the Angels taking on Patrick Corbin. There is a lot to like with this slate.

Favorite Starters to Use for DFS Lineups

Max Scherzer, New York Mets

This one is a bit risky, which in itself feels weird to say about Scherzer but he has not pitched well. He only has eight strikeouts across 11.1 innings pitched and has a 6.35 ERA in that span. However, this is still an elite pitcher who has the ability to dominate any offense. Would any of us be surprised if he goes out and tosses seven shutout innings with 10 Ks? I wouldn’t be.

Luis Castillo, Seattle Mariners

Castillo has made a statement early and looks like a potential Cy Young contender this year. He has pitched 11.2 shutout innings thus far with 12 strikeouts and a 0.43 WHIP. He has faced the Guardians and Angels, both of which are tougher matchups than the Cubs. Castillo should be able to keep the good times rollin’ today and he will probably be the most rostered SP.

Bryce Elder, Atlanta Braves

Elder was very sharp in his season debut, firing six shutout innings with six strikeouts against a tough Cardinals offense while picking up the win. He scored 25.9 dk points in that outing and now he gets to face a lesser offense in the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds currently have the 8th highest strikeout rate in the league. Elder is extremely cheap and the Braves are the second heaviest favorites to win on the slate.

Recommended DFS Hitters

Favorite Hitters to Use for DFS Lineups

Logan O’Hoppe, C, Los Angeles Angels

O’Hoppe may only be hitting .240 thus far, but he does already have three home runs and nine RBI through seven games played. He is very cheap and he is taking on Corbin tonight. Right-handed bats have a .785 OPS against Corbin in his career, compared to the .664 mark that lefties have produced. He has a 5.86 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over his last 400 innings.

Alec Burleson, 1B/OF, St. Louis Cardinals

Burleson has been locked into the 2nd spot in the Cardinals lineup and he has been great thus far this season, slashing .318/.375/.591 with a home run and three doubles. He is very cheap and he can play 1B or OF on DK (only OF on FanDuel), which is nice. He is playing at Coors Field today against a bad pitcher in Marquez, so there’s too much to like at this cheap of a price tag and I expect him to see pretty high ownership tonight. Lefties have a .781 OPS against Marquez in his career, compared to the .706 mark that righties have produced.

Ezequiel Tovar, SS, Colorado Rockies

Tovar is not off to a great start, but this still a talented player with a cheap price tag who is playing at Coors Field against a weak pitcher in Matz. He has been better against lefties in his career, slashing .294/.294/.529 across 17 PA’s, compared to .167/.200/.208 against righties. Righty bats have a slightly higher OPS (.765) against Matz in his career than lefties do (.732).

Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels

Trout is doing Trout things as he has scored 16, 22, and 12 dk points over his last three games and is averaging 13 dk points per game on the year. He is hitting .355 with three home runs , nine RBI, and nine runs scored through nine games and now he gets to take on possibly the worst pitcher in baseball in Corbin. He can work in a wrap-around stack with O’Hoppe.

Jurickson Profar, OF, Colorado Rockies

Another Rockies bat, Profar got his season going yesterday with a big game, going 2-4 with a home run and a walk to finish with 19 dk points. He continues to be the Rockies leadoff man and that is a great thing for a cheap player who is playing at Coors Field. He works in a wrap-around stack with Tovar as well that you can fill out with someone like Bryant and/or Diaz.
