The Los Angeles Angels have consistently been a favorable matchup for opposing pitchers when it comes to strikeout props, especially against right-handers. That sets up well for Trey Yesavage to rack up the Ks for the Toronto Blue Jays in today’s game. 

Yesavage has been impressive in two starts since returning from his early-season absence. Across 9.1 innings, the righty has surrendered only one earned run while showing strong swing-and-miss stuff. He recorded six strikeouts in his latest outing, flashing the upside that made him an intriguing strikeout pitcher last season. 

Plus, Yesavage’s workload should increase in the coming starts. He threw 74 pitches in his season debut, and followed that with 82 pitches in his second appearance. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Toronto extend him beyond 90 pitches today, giving him a realistic chance to work into the sixth inning. That boosts his strikeout potential even more.

As noted above, the matchup is a very favorable one. The Angels own the highest strikeout rate in baseball against right-handed pitching this season at 26.0%. Over the past week, that K rate is at 27.2%, the third-highest mark in the MLB during that span. Los Angeles has also posted just a .203 batting average and 6.4% walk rate against righties in this past week. All signs point toward Yesavage clearing 5.5 strikeouts against this Angels offense.

Clay Holmes MLB Chalkboard Fantasy Pick: Under 5.5 Hits Allowed

It’s been a stellar start to the season for Clay Holmes. Over his first seven starts, the New York Mets’ right-hander owns a 1.69 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. He’s also allowed two runs or fewer in every single outing thus far. Let’s hope he keeps it going against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. 

More specifically, Holmes should limit the hits in this matchup. The Diamondbacks have struggled to hit right-handed pitching lately, with just a .187 batting average in the split over the past week (29th in MLB). They’re also batting .219 against righties over the past two weeks, which ranks 27th in the majors. 

As for Holmes, he’s allowing just a .183 batting average this season. He’s allowed under 5.5 hits in every start thus far, and four or fewer hits allowed in five of his seven outings. Plus, the righty is generating a 57.4% groundball rate (93rd percentile) with just a 4.1% barrel rate (85th). That ability to force soft contact on the ground can play well in the right matchups, like this one.
