San Diego Padres starter Randy Vasquez could be in trouble against the Los Angeles Dodgers today. The right-hander owns a 4.17 ERA this season, but his recent form has been especially concerning. Over his last 6 starts, Vasquez has posted a 6.91 ERA and 6.73 FIP. Plus, his 6.51 xERA suggests those struggles could continue. 

There are several ways to back the Dodgers, or fade Vasquez, in this matchup. Let’s roll with Freddie Freeman to have a productive game. The veteran first baseman is batting .311 with a .944 OPS against right-handed pitching this season. He’s also hitting .313 with a .987 OPS on the road. 

Freeman is swinging a hot bat lately as well. He boasts a .325 batting average and .982 OPS over the last 21 games, while recording over 1.5 hits+runs+RBI in 14 of the last 21 contests. Furthermore, Freeman brings in favorable BvP numbers against Vasquez. In their careers, he’s 3-for-7 with two doubles vs. the San Diego pitcher.

Foster Griffin is having an impressive season for the Washington Nationals. Through 16 starts, the left-hander owns a 3.15 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. He’s also recorded 89 strikeouts thus far, ranking 25th among qualified MLB starting pitchers.  

Griffin is in a favorable spot to pile up strikeouts against the Baltimore Orioles today. The O’s have struggled against left-handed pitching this season, posting a 25.1% strikeout rate in the split – the fifth-highest mark in the majors. That trend has only worsened recently, as Baltimore has struck out at a 28.6% clip against lefties over the past three weeks (third-highest in MLB).
