Guardians vs. Yankees Prediction: Tuesday, June 2nd

Let’s lead off the MLB best bets today with two of the top teams in the American League facing off. The New York Yankees hold a few notable edges as they host the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night. Let’s back the home favorites on the runline for the full game.

Cam Schlittler will get the start for New York, which immediately points us in that direction. The right-hander has been dominant this season as the current betting favorite to win the AL Cy Young. He boasts a 1.50 ERA, 1.91 FIP, and 0.85 WHIP so far. He also owns an excellent 1.07 ERA over his last 8 starts.

Plus, most of Schlittler’s advanced stats are elite and trustworthy. The Yankees’ starter brings in a 29.5% strikeout rate (92nd MLB percentile), 36.7% chase rate (94th), 4.7% walk rate (96th), and .213 xBA (79th). He now faces a Guardians offense that ranks 26th in the majors in wOBA vs. right-handed pitching this season. Over the past week, they have a .257 wOBA and a .207 batting average against righties.

As Schlittler does his thing, the New York offense should provide run support. Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo has a 3.57 ERA and 1.40 WHIP this season. The left-hander has been shakier over the past month, with a 4.23 ERA and 5.14 FIP over his last 6 starts. His 4.51 FIP this year also points to more negative regression.

Cantillo will have his hands full with the dangerous Yankees’ lineup. They boast a league-high .351 wOBA and 124 wRC+ against left-handed pitching this season. Over the past two weeks, the Yanks have a .396 wOBA and 155 wRC+ vs. southpaws. It could be a rough outing for Cantillo, who’s allowed 4 runs in half of his last 6 starts.

If you’re scared off by the runline, consider that the Yankees are 17-9 at home this season and 13 of those victories came by 2+ runs. When they win, it’s usually by a comfortable margin. Meanwhile, 12 of Cleveland’s 13 road losses have been by 2+ runs.

Rangers vs. Cardinals Prediction: Tuesday, June 2nd

Let’s focus on an interleague matchup for our second round of MLB best bets today. The Texas Rangers won yesterday’s series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-1 victory. The visitors can do it again with key pitching and offensive advantages in Tuesday’s game.

First off, the Cardinals are slumping lately. They’re just 4-9 over the past 13 games and 2-6 over the last 8 contests. The offense is averaging only 2.1 runs over the last 7 games as well. Texas, meanwhile, brings in a 4-game winning streak after its recent losing stretch. The Rangers seem to be trending up right now.

Dustin May gets the start for St. Louis. The right-hander has a shaky 4.57 ERA this season. Though he’s been a bit better lately after a rough start to the year, May’s underlying metrics are still worrisome. His 20.6% whiff rate (18th MLB percentile), 20.0% strikeout rate (35th), and 48.6% hard-hit rate (5th) are concerning in certain matchups.

The Rangers can get to May with their upper-tier road offense. They have a .325 wOBA, 106 wRC+, and .730 OPS on the road this season, which all rank in the top 10 of the majors. Texas also has solid numbers against right-handed pitching over the last two weeks (.334 wOBA, 113 wRC+).

On the other side, Nathan Eovaldi toes the rubber. His 3.93 ERA doesn’t look great on paper. However, it’s inflated due to a pair of bad outings to begin the season. The Rangers’ veteran boasts a 2.85 ERA over his past 9 starts and a 2.25 ERA over the last 5 starts. Though he did just give up 5 runs to Houston last time out, we can expect a bounce-back effort today.

As noted above, the St. Louis offense is slumping lately. The Cardinals have been held to 1 or 0 runs scored in 5 of their last 7 games. Over the past week, they have a league-worst .230 wOBA and 44 wRC+ against right-handed pitching as well. The Cards have also struck out at a 31.5% clip vs. righties in the last week. Eovaldi can limit this lineup, even on the road.
