Tigers vs. Angels Prediction: Sunday, July 19th

Let’s lead off the MLB best bets today with the Los Angeles Angels hosting the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers are looking for the sweep after taking the first two games of this series. Let’s back the road favorites to cover the runline en route to another victory.

Detroit has now won 11 of its last 14 games. The Tigers were hot before the All-Star break and have picked up right where they left off. In this stretch, 10 of their 11 wins have been by multiple runs. They’re also averaging 5.1 runs per game over the past 14 contests.

Conversely, the Angels have now lost 12 of their last 14 games entering today. Plus, nine of those 12 losses have been by at least two runs. The offense has been held to three runs or fewer in 10 of these past 14 contests as well.

Casey Mize gets the start for Detroit. The right-hander boasts a 2.79 ERA and 2.69 FIP this season. He comes in pitching well lately, with a 2.72 ERA and 2.58 FIP over his last eight starts. He should take care of a Los Angeles lineup that has a .271 wOBA and 26.6% strikeout rate against right-handed pitching during July. Those marks rank 26th and 28th in the league over this span.

Meanwhile, Angels starter Ryan Johnson has a rough 6.75 ERA this year. That includes a poor 5.40 ERA in his six starts. The Tigers have had some struggles of their own against right-handed pitching recently. Still, Johnson is worth fading as he’s given up eight runs over his last two starts combined.

Nationals vs. Athletics Prediction: Sunday, July 19th

Let’s focus on an interleague matchup for our second round of MLB best bets today. This series between the Nationals and Athletics has been a tale of two games. The Nats took the opener on Friday with a 23-4 shellacking. Then, the A’s responded with a 15-1 win on Saturday.

What will the series finale bring after those two outbursts? Well, we’re backing Washington to come out ahead this time. The Nats have the clear starting pitching edge and the better offense to trust in this matchup. Take them to win on the moneyline and lead after five innings.

Foster Griffin was in full breakout mode before the break. He posted a 2.77 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a 10-2 record over 19 starts en route to All-Star honors. The left-hander has been lights-out lately as well, boasting a 1.25 ERA and 2.68 FIP over his last seven starts. He’s also allowed fewer than two runs in seven straight outings now.

Griffin should keep it going, even on the road here. The Athletics have a subpar .287 wOBA against left-handed pitching over the past month, ranking 24th in the majors. They also have a lofty 24.5% strikeout rate vs. southpaws overall this season, which is 23rd in the league. Meanwhile, Griffin owns a 2.79 ERA on the road this year.

On the other side, Athletics starter Jacob Lopez brings in an ugly 6.83 ERA and 1.79 WHIP this season. He also has a rough 8.31 ERA at home. Another shaky outing could be coming today. The Nationals have a league-best .348 wOBA and 120 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. They also own a .335 wOBA and 111 wRC+ on the road, which are second in the majors only behind the Dodgers.
