Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals Predictions: Sunday, August 10th
Sunday Night Baseball this week features an NL Central matchup between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals. The division rivals have split the first two games of the series ahead of tonight’s finale. Let’s break down which side presents value as we finish the weekend strong.Â
Cardinals starter Sonny Gray is having an up-and-down season with a 4.21 ERA, his underlying metrics say he’s been unlucky at times. Gray owns a 3.09 FIP and 2.95 xFIP that are notably lower. The veteran’s 4.0% walk rate (99th percentile) is a career-best mark while his 26.8% strikeout rate (79th) and 31.9% chase rate (88th) are encouraging as well.Â
Admittedly, Gray has had some blowup outings recently. Still, he boasts a 2.83 FIP over his last 8 starts and a 2.35 FIP over his past 14 outings. We also saw Gray look pretty effective in his last start against the Dodgers, allowing only 1 run with 8 strikeouts over 7 strong innings. He should see more positive regression headed his way this season.Â
Let’s hope we get the good version of Gray at home in this spot. The Cards’ right-hander owns a 2.84 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 14 career starts against the Cubs. He also has a 2.83 FIP at home this season. Meanwhile, Chicago has struggled vs. righties over the past week with a .255 wOBA (26th in MLB), .213 BA (23rd), and 62 wRC+ (26th).Â
On the other side, Shota Imanaga starts for the Cubs. The southpaw has been good this year with a 3.12 ERA and 1.00 WHIP thus far. However, he also has some reasons to fade in the right matchups with worrisome advanced stats.Â
Imanaga’s 4.47 FIP and 4.59 xFIP are hard to ignore, despite how productive he’s been. His .225 BABIP and 85.8% left-on-base rate are also a tad unsustainable. The Chicago lefty also has a shaky 4.62 FIP and 3.86 ERA over his last 7 starts.Â
Now Imanaga has to face a St. Louis offense that’s crushing left-handed pitching right now. Since the All-Star break, the Cardinals are batting .381 vs. lefties (1st in MLB) with a .400 wOBA (1st), 159 wRC+ (1st), and .938 OPS (1st). This is as tough as it gets on the road.Â
Let’s take the value on St. Louis as a home underdog tonight. Gray can best Imanaga early on while the Cardinals’ offense is more trustworthy with those elite splits vs. lefties lately.Â

New York Mets vs. Milwaukee Brewers Predictions: Sunday, August 10th
The Milwaukee Brewers won again yesterday and continue to stay hot. They’re now 15-4 since the All-Star break, including a current eight-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the New York Mets’ woes carry on with a 1-10 record over their last 11 games. We backed the Brew Crew on Saturday and we’re doing it again today.Â
Brewers starter Quinn Priester is dealing lately. The right-hander boasts 1.99 ERA over his past 5 outings and a 2.40 ERA over his last 11 appearances. Milwaukee has used him out of the bullpen at times, but he’s thriving in the starter role.
Priester owns a 2.57 ERA across his 16 starts this season. He’s also allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 13 of his 16 starts overall. This is an extended run of impressive outings from the young righty. It’s also worth noting that the Brewers have won 12 straight games in which Priester has pitched.Â
If you’re wondering, Priester has been excellent at home recently. He’s posted a 1.76 ERA over his last 6 home starts. Now he’ll take on a slumping Mets offense with poor splits against right-handers lately. Over the past two weeks vs. righties, New York has a .209 BA (27th in MLB) and .652 OPS (25th).Â
As Priester does his thing, the Brewers’ hitters should provide enough run support in their own matchup. Mets starter Sean Manaea looked good in his first handful of starts since joining the rotation in July. However, he came back down to Earth last outing with 5 runs allowed to Cleveland.Â
Manaea may run into trouble again here. Milwaukee is hammering left-handed pitching right now. Over the past two weeks vs. lefties, the Brewers have a .382 wOBA (3rd in MLB), 151 wRC+ (3rd), .329 BA (2nd), and .891 OPS (3rd). They’re also averaging 7.9 runs per game in the current winning streak.Â
Grab the Brewers to win on the moneyline and lead after five innings. Maybe Milwaukee is bound to lose at some point and the Mets are overdue for a win. Yet, the numbers don’t tell us it’s happening today.Â
