Philadelphia Phillies vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Predictions: Sunday, September 21st
Sunday’s series finale between the Phillies and Diamondbacks features plenty of playoff implications. Philadelphia has already clinched the division, but it can still catch the Brewers for the top seed in the National League. As for the Diamondbacks, they’re still alive for the third NL Wild Card spot.
For today’s game, let’s back the road Phillies to stay hot. They’ve now gone 16-6 since August 28th, including 9 wins in the past 12 games. The NL East champs may have wrapped up the division, but they still have motivation to continue winning with the No. 1 seed still in balance.Â
After some shaky outings in August, Phillies starter Ranger Suarez has calmed down lately. He owns a 1.47 ERA over his past 6 starts to lower his season-long ERA to 2.84. The southpaw has only a few bad starts this year. He’s now allowed 3 or fewer earned runs in 20 of 24 outings.Â
The road matchup against Arizona is a tough one on paper. Yet, Suarez brings in a 2.25 ERA on the road this season. That includes a quality start or better in 9 of his 11 road outings thus far.Â
Meanwhile, the Phillies’ offense is rolling right now. They’ve scored 6+ runs in 8 of the last 11 games. The lineup is especially crushing left-handed pitching. Over the past two weeks, Philadelphia has a .356 wOBA and 127 wRC+ in the split.Â
That means it could be a long day for Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez. The southpaw has a 5.12 ERA and 1.56 WHIP this season, and he’s gotten knocked around in recent outings. Rodriguez has a 4.53 ERA over his past 10 starts, with 4+ runs allowed in 5 of those starts.Â
E-Rod’s current form in this matchup immediately gives an edge to Philly. Plus, the Arizona bullpen has a rough 7.34 ERA over the past two weeks. The Phillies should come through on the road here. We also get them off a loss, and Philadelphia hasn’t lost back-to-back games since late August.Â

Atlanta Braves vs. Detroit Tigers Predictions: Sunday, September 21st
The Tigers are slumping hard as the regular season winds down. Detroit is 1-8 over its last 8 games and just 7-17 over the past month. It’s gotten so bad that Cleveland is now pushing for the AL Central title as the season’s final week starts up.Â
Let’s fade the Tigers today with a few edges pointing in Atlanta’s direction. The Braves, meanwhile, are ending the year strong. They’ve now won 7 straight heading into Sunday’s matchup, including the first two games of this series.
Braves starter Spencer Strider is pitching well lately. He owns a 2.52 ERA over his past 4 starts. He’s also now allowed 3 earned runs or fewer in 13 of his last 16 outings. Despite struggling for much of the season and having a 4.64 ERA overall, Strider’s current form is more reminiscent of the pitcher who was one of the best in the sport.Â
Strider can continue to perform well in a favorable matchup today. The Tigers are struggling against right-handed pitching right now. Over the past two weeks in the split, Detroit has a .204 batting average (25th in MLB), .271 wOBA (27th), 71 wRC+ (27th), and 27.5% strikeout rate (27th).Â
Meanwhile, Tigers starter Casey Mize could run into trouble against the Braves’ lineup. The righty has a rough 5.21 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break. That includes a 4.97 ERA over his past 5 starts as well. He’s limping to the finish line after being much more consistent a few months ago.Â
Mize will face a Braves offense that’s averaging 7.8 runs per game over the past 7 contests. Atlanta is especially crushing righties lately, with a .366 wOBA and 136 wRC+ in the split over the past week. It’s a tough spot for Mize, who’s been getting hit around too much recently.Â
