Always nice to open up the daily stolen base picks article with a shoutout for a win, right? If you tailed yesterday’s article, then you got a nice hit with Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels. We were on him the day before as well, but knew everything was set up properly for him to swipe a bag yesterday and he delivered. We also identified Konnor Griffin of the Pirates due to Victor Caratini’s struggles behind the dish and while Griffin never stole a base, you have four players who did, one of whom, Oneil Cruz, took two. As long as we can continue to identify the pitchers and catchers who struggle most, we should be in great shape. Best MLB Stolen Base Picks Today:
Locking in the best stolen base predictions means finding the absolute perfect storm of a high-on-base runner and a weak battery. Here are our top two MLB stolen base picks today for Sunday, May 31:
Favorite Bets:
Jarren Duran, Boston Red Sox (+437)
I’m sure some of the lower odds for players up above can/will play today, but my research is pointing me towards Duran today, especially with the Guardians going with Austin Hedges behind the plate. Typically, a part-timer, third-wheel back there with Patrick Bailey and Bo Naylor, Hedges sports a 13-percent caught-stealing rate on 16 attempts this season and that should allow Boston to run the bases freely. Guardians’ righty Tanner Bibee has been up and down all season long and while he’s only allowed five stolen bases on the season, we expect Boston to be aggressive. Duran is locked in and riding a seven-game hit streak, while Bibee is allowing a .332 wOBA to lefty hitters. It should also be noted that I had Duran as a longshot a few days ago and while he wasn’t credited with a stolen base, he should have been as the umpires got a foul-tip wrong and he was sent back to first. Let’s have some Sunday fun, shall we?
Kevin McGonigle, Detroit Tigers (+464)
Yes, another long-odds guy here, but again, this is where the research is taking me today. Not only does White Sox righthander Sean Burke, who has allowed nine stolen bases on the season, struggle to contain lefthanded hitting, but the tandem of Edgar Quero and Drew Romo behind the dish is sporting a combined 24.2-percent caught-stealing rate. Quero, the hotter bat at the moment, has a slightly lower rate, but they’re pretty even. The lefty-swinging McGonigle is batting .291 with a .392 OBP against right-handed pitching and six of his eight steals this season have come against righties. Definitely worth a shot with 10 hits and three walks over his last nine games.
