Rangers vs. Astros Predictions, Picks, Odds & Starting Pitchers: Today, 7/12
With today being the final day before the 2025 MLB All-Star break, there’s actually no Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN tomorrow night. Therefore, a featured clash on FOX between AL West rivals is the marquee matchup of the weekend, which also means that we’ve got our best Rangers vs. Astros predictions.
With it also being an in-state rivalry, being able to add to the best bet from our Rangers vs. Astros picks with a guaranteed Underdog promo code bonus worth up to $1,000 that is available in Texas is as good as it gets!
Rangers vs. Astros Predictions For MLB On FOX, 7/12
If there was ever a matchup that was worthy of making up for not having MLB action for a few days, it’s this one. Not only is it both a rivalry within the division AND state of Texas, but it’s also a starting pitching matchup baseball fans dream of.
That’s thanks to the fact that the Rangers are sending ageless ace Jacob deGrom to the mound, while the Astros are countering with legendary lefty Framber Valdez. Therefore, you won’t be surprised to see the Rangers vs. Astros odds providing us with a low total, as both lineups will have their hands full to say the least.
While we also expect runs to be at a premium, since it takes only a timely hit or two to ruin an under, we’re taking a more specific approach for the best bet from our Rangers vs. Astros predictions to provide maximum value.
Texas Rangers: Jacob DeGrom Dealing Like It’s 2018
So that we can properly dive into that best bet, let’s first five down each team. Starting with the road team, although they won’t be far from Arlington, means beginning with ace Jacob deGrom and the Rangers. Speaking of deGrom, you saw us label him as ageless, and that was no accident.
The 37-year-old is somehow still looking just as incredible as he did in his first of back-to-back Cy Young seasons in 2018. Enjoying back-to-back starts against the struggling Orioles certainly didn’t hurt, but even still, deGrom has allowed more than two earned runs just once over his last 15 starts.
Houston Astros: Finding A Way To Remain Dominant
With this game and today’s slate overall rounding out the first “half” of the season, you’ll likely see grades given to each team from all sorts of platforms. They’re sure to be conflicting at least somewhat, but at the end of the day, the Astros have once again found themselves at the top of the AL West at the break.
While that’s par for the course in Houston in recent years, it seems even more remarkable this year given what they’ve dealt with. Not only did they enter the year without Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman, but they’ve even fought through a significant Yordan Alvarez injury. Of course, their rotation has a lot to do with their success, which you’ll see more of given our best bet!

Rangers vs. Astros Best Bet: Framber Valdez Over 4.5 Strikeouts (Add Player Projections At Underdog)
We said that we had an approach that is more specific than a low-scoring game for you. However, if you just want to stick with the standard markets for your Rangers vs. Astros picks, that’s certainly a fine approach.
It’s also not usually the case where we’re focused on a pitching prop, NOT focused on Jacob deGrom when he’s toeing the rubber, but tonight’s matchup has us focused on Astros starter Framber Valdez. Interestingly enough, it was Valdez who actually surpassed an MLB record that was once held by deGrom!
It was for the most consecutive quality starts, and it makes this pitching duel even more interesting. Regardless, we’re focused on the here and now with Valdez’s strikeout prop. Taking the mound at home should already have him feeling comfortable, and a matchup against the Rangers lineup should have him feeling confident.
That’s not to say that the Texas lineup is weak overall, but they certainly are against lefties this year. They’ve been rivaling teams like the Orioles and Guardians for the absolute worst OPS against southpaws in the entire MLB.
Valdez is clearly no ordinary lefty, either - he recorded seven strikeouts against the star-studded Dodgers lineup in his last start. He’s even had a three-start streak not long ago of recording nine, 11, and 12 strikeouts! Oh yeah, he’s even faced the Rangers earlier this year, where he recorded eight strikeouts.
Such a remarkably low line has also helped him hit the over in 11 of his last 13 starts, and even if we see it tick up to 5.5 (and even 6.5!), we still love this approach. Therefore, the best bet from our Rangers vs. Astros predictions is Framber Valdez over 4.5 strikeouts (enjoy a ton of player pick ‘ems at Underdog).
Rangers vs. Astros Injury Report & Starting Pitchers
We noted a Yordan Alvarez injury earlier, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Rangers vs. Astros injury news in Houston. They also have concerns regarding Cristian Javier, Spencer Arrighetti, Jeremy Pena, Chas McCormick, Christian Walker, AND Luis Garcia!
As for Texas, their primary concerns lie with Joc Pederson and starters Tyler Mahle and Jon Gray. Speaking of starters, here are the expected Rangers vs. Astros starters for today once again:
- Texas Rangers starting pitcher today: Jacob deGrom (9-2, 2.29 ERA)
- Houston Astros starting pitcher today: Framber Valdez (10-4, 2.90 ERA)
