Mets vs. Phillies Predictions For MLB Sunday Night Baseball

Having an NL East rivalry is always exciting, and the Mets and Phillies both entered this series following divisional series against the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins, respectively. As for this Sunday Night Baseball clash, they’re providing fans with a battle of lefties on the mound.

For New York, David Peterson is getting the call while Jesus Luzardo is toeing the rubber for Philly. It’s also not the first time these division foes have met this year, as they had their first series nearly exactly two months ago, which was a sweep by the Mets. Of course, being at home for that one certainly helped rather than the road this weekend.

We’ve also seen these teams become arguably the most polarizing in all of baseball, not just the division or NL. Coming into this series, we saw the Phillies win eight of 10 games shortly after losing five straight. Similarly, the Mets getting swept by the Braves before Friday’s series opener made it their longest losing streak since August 2023 at six.

Obviously, something’s had to give as this series progressed, so let’s progress through each team to get to a best bet from our Mets vs. Phillies predictions for tonight specifically.

New York Mets: David Peterson, The Missing Piece?

The Mets have been expected to be contenders the past several seasons now, and with the team bolstering the lineup with Juan Soto this offseason, that remains the case. His success, or lack thereof, has been discussed endlessly, but right now, it’s the New York starting rotation that is dealing with some serious attrition.

Thankfully for their sake, Peterson has been holding things together. He’s been able to keep things afloat with wins in three of his last four starts - the other two being no decisions. That includes two outings against the star-studded Los Angeles Dodgers, and his 2.60 ERA is the fourth-best in the entire NL among qualified pitchers!

Philadelphia Phillies: The Jesus Luzardo Rollercoaster

If there was one individual player that perfectly personifies the Phillies season, it’s starter Jesus Luzardo. The lefty had been lighting it up, recording THREE starts with 10 strikeouts in a five-outing span. However, like Philly has done at times this season, that hot streak came to an end.

Luzardo has now recorded a loss in three of his last four starts, including the most recent, which was supposed to be a revenge game for him against the Marlins. It’s looking like he’s regressing to the mean that we saw from him last season of a 3-6 record and 4.99 ERA - why Miami was willing to let him go.

Mets vs. Phillies Best Bet: Alec Bohm Over 1.5 Total Bases (-115 at DraftKings Sportsbook)

The streakiness of these teams makes it even more difficult to navigate the betting markets, especially in terms of simply backing either team to win the game. Therefore, our Mets vs. Phillies predictions are focused elsewhere, as we’re targeting the player prop markets.

In that regard, we’re sticking with the home team. However, it’s not with one of the household names that you might expect with guys like Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner and the like. We also need others to step up with Bryce Harper still not 100%, and Alec Bohm is the guy that we have our eyes on.

He hits just behind those two aforementioned sluggers, and he’s one that would take their place in many other lineups. We also have him targeted given his success with tonight’s matchup. In terms of lefties in general, Bohm is a career .305 hitter, and more importantly when it comes to total bases props, a .505 slugging percentage.

As for facing Mets starter David Peterson specifically, he has a remarkable .708 slugging percentage, and it’s with a significant sample size of 24 at-bats! That’s more than any current Philly hitter, so it’s been far from fluke success.

Furthermore, Bohm hit .500 in the first series against New York this year. Everything above is simply a recipe for us locking in the best bet from our Mets vs. Phillies picks on Alec Bohm over 1.5 total bases (-115 at DraftKings Sportsbook).

Mets vs. Phillies Injury Report & Starting Pitchers

At this point in a long MLB season, every team has at least some sort of injury concerns. As far as Mets vs. Phillies injury news goes, New York’s are nearly all about their rotation with Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea AND Frankie Montas all on the injured list.

Unfortunately for Philly, Bryce Harper always needs to be monitored at this point, and although he’s had a rough start to his season, starter Aaron Nola is also worth mentioning in terms of guys on the IL.

Given that they’re a significant piece of any matchup, you’ve seen the expected Mets vs. Phillies starters for Sunday Night Baseball already, and you’ll see them outlined below as well:
