League of Legends DFS Breakdown
Series #1: Liiv Sandbox v Gen.G
Series Breakdown: I find this matchup to be interesting. I still feel like Gen.G is the best team in the LCK, even with their struggles against T1. They have great team coordination and the best player on the planet, Chovy (87 FPPG in their last series and an 8.2 KDA). That being said, I think LSB are still a sneaky good team. I love how they leverage Prince’s individual skill in the ADC role (3rd most kills in the LCK with 96 and a 70% team kill participation rate) and work to put him in favorable positions through the mid-game. This series will be decided in the jungle and how each jungler can set the pace of play. I think the edge has to be with Peanut (63 kills, 7.1 KDA, and a 59% first blood participation rate) and his ability to set up plays minutes before he tries to make them. His pathing is deliberate and we see the impact of this with the leads that Gen.G secures in the early game.
Favorite Picks: Chovy (GEN: $10,800/$7,200), Lehends (GEN: $5,200), Peanut (GEN: $6,800)
Value Picks: Prince (LSB: $9,300/$6,200), Dove (LSB: $5,000)
Cann’s Match Pick: Gen.G (2-1)
Series #2: DRX v Damwon
Series Breakdown: The last time these two teams met, DRX pulled off the shocker and beat the former giants of the LCK pretty handedly, but I wouldn’t expect that again. True, the DRX mid-laner (Zeka) is still playing like a man possessed (95 kills - most among all mid-laners) but there is a larger game to be played. The DK bottom lane of deokdam and Kellin are finally pulling their weight and Nuguri (64 kills, 116 assists) is only behind T1’s Zeus as the most impactful top laner in the LCK. DRX has become more and more reliant on Zeka and his ability to make plays with his jungler which is now becoming easier to gameplan for. ShowMaker and Canyon may not be the ceiling in the LCK anymore, but they can limit the impact of this approach by effectively tracking their lane opponents throughout the game. I see DK winning a close series but players from both sides racking up some points.
Favorite Picks: deokdam (DK: $10,800/$7,200), Nuguri (DK: $6,000). Kellin (DK: $5,400)
Value Picks: Zeka (DRX: $9,900/$6,600), Pyosik (DRX: $5,800), DRX ($4,600)
Cann’s Match Pick: Damwon (2-1)
Series #3: Weibo Gaming v TT Gaming
Series Breakdown: TT are coming off of a huge team win against OMG and have positioned themselves to have a real shot in making the playoffs this split. Unfortunately, they are going to have to play a more cohesive game if they are to win this series against WBG. Where TT won against OMG (being able to bait OMG into skill matches and beating them with team play) they will not be able to replicate that same win condition against WBG. WBG relies heavily on late game team fights because players like TheShy and huanfeng can have record-setting early/mid game performances in both positive and negative ways. This means that with the inconsistency on an individual level, the team needs to play consistently as a unit. We see Angel (70 kills and a 4.9 KDA) end up having to be that glue in teamfights that holds WBG together. This means Beichuan and Ucal (TT jungler and mid-laner) will have to put pressure on the WBG carry to try and secure a win on Friday. I would not be surprised if WBG cannot close this series out cleanly (they rarely do) so don’t overpay on too many WBG players and then get burned on the backside.
Favorite Picks: huanfeng (WBG: $11,400/$7,600), TheShy (WBG: $6,600), ON (WBG: $5,600)
Value Picks: Beichuan (TT: $5,600), Ucal (TT: $6,400)
Cann’s Match Pick: Weibo Gaming (2-1)
Series #4: Victory Five v LNG Esports
Series Breakdown: There are a lot of reasons I like V5 in this spot. First, great teams play at a heightened level of intensity after a loss. V5 lost their first series against WBG and have now lost their pace to JDG and TES (10-1 v V5’s 9-1 record). The second facet of this pick is how much I view LNG as a fraudulent “top-tier team”. LNG had a huge win-streak in the Spring Split that was primarily fueled by their weak, early schedule. As soon as LNG hit better teams in the last month of the Spring Split, they dropped quickly in the standings. We have had similar results in the Summer Split with the exception of their consistency against weaker teams. LNG’s ADC, Light (123 kills and a team kill share percentage of 36%) is still a top five ADC but no longer seen as the top carry in the LPL. The key player for you to look at has to be Rookie. He is arguably the most gifted individual in the LPL and he drives this V5 team. Even in losses Rookie can put up big numbers with flashy play. Doinb (LNG mid-laner) will need to play one of his best control mage picks in hopes of containing Rookie to the mid lane and not allowing him to rotate throughout the map.
Favorite Picks: Rookie (V5: $11,400/$7,600), Rich (V5: $6,400), Photic (V5: $8,000)
Value Picks: Light (LNG: $10,500/$7,000), Tarzan (LNG: $6,200)
Cann’s Match Pick: Victory Five (2-0)
