League of Legends Championship Series

August 6th, 2022

Two weeks left in the LCS season and five games left to play is all that separates teams from postseason play and going home. We have two teams (Evil Geniuses and 100 Thieves) who have locked in spots for the playoffs and no team has been eliminated yet. The LCS has one of the largest playoff brackets among the major regions but the placement means everything. Being one of the top seeds in the playoffs reduces how many series you need to win to make it to the championship. Teams have made their final roster adjustments coming into the final few weeks of play and it  is up to the players/coaching staffs to deliver. Let’s dive in!

League of Legends DFS Fantasy Breakdown

Game #1: Golden Guardians v 100 Thieves

Game Breakdown: Looking at this game in a vacuum, this should be a 100 Thieves win without much trouble. I think there is space though for Golden Guardians to convert some of the momentum they saw last week with two close losses into an upset on Saturday. 100 Thieves have always been a top team who have been primed to drop a game every few weeks that they had no business losing. I will say that FBI’s production has skyrocketed (53 kills, 32% team kill share rate) but he is facing off a pretty veteran bottom lane duo in Stixxay and Biofrost. If the Golden Guardians can use their new jungler (River) to put pressure on the 100 Thieves carry, they could steal this game.

Favorite Picks: Abbedagge (100: $11,100/$7,400), Ssumday (100: $7,000), 100 Thieves ($5,600)

Value Picks: Stixxay (GG: $6,000), Olleh (GG: $4,800), River (GG: $5,800)

Cann’s Match Pick: Golden Guardians

Game #2: Evil Geniuses v Team Solomid

Game Breakdown: The story of this TSM season has been that as soon as Bjergsen was taken out of the equation (as either a player or a coach), nothing else was there. You find that the Evil; Geniuses may not be the most polished team in the world but they are definitely a team who doesn’t know when they are losing in a game. They trust each other and trust their ability to outplay enemy teams in big moments. They are driven by Danny (64 kills, 7.5 KDA) but the team rests upon the ability of Inspired and Impact to initiate teamfights for the squad. The control in the larger macro game play in the late game is usually where we see EG just outthink their opponent.

Favorite Picks: Danny (EG: $12,000/$8,000), Impact (EG: $7,200), Inspired (EG: $7,400), Evil Geniuses ($5,800)

Value Picks: Maple (TSM: $5,800)

Cann’s Match Pick: Evil Geniuses

Game #3: Team Liquid v FlyQuest

Game Breakdown: Most people are pretty down on this Team Liquid team, mainly because of their struggles to match the expectations that this roster has set for them. Sitting at 8-5 in a three team tie for third place, TL is running out of runway to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack. The solo lanes of TL (Bjergsen and Bwipo) are the highest producing members of this team and they have frequently had to compensate for the shortcomings of the bottom lane of Hans sama/CoreJJ. The danger of this issue for TL is that FlyQuest main strength is their bottom lane duo of Johnsun and Aphromoo. How teams can leverage their strengths to compensate for their glaring weaknesses will be what determines our winner today. Santorin (TL jungler) has to find ways to get Bjergsen and Bwipo ahead and almost forsake his own bottom lane while Josedeodo (FLY jungler) will have to focus on his bottom lane and trying to stack dragons as quickly as possible.

Favorite Picks: Bjergsen (TL: $11,400/$7,600), Santorin (TL: $7,000), Bwipo (TL: $6,600)

Value Picks: Johnsun (FLY: $9,600/$6,400), Aphromoo (FLY: $4,600), FlyQuest ($4,000)

Cann’s Match Pick: Team Liquid

Game #4: Immortals v Dignitas

Game Breakdown: Immortals are pretty heavy favorites here but that makes it even more of a reason not to pick anyone from this matchup. Neither Dignitas (who just traded away their best player to Golden Guardians and are swapping in a lot of Academy players into the active roster) nor Immortals are consistent teams. The high price tags for Immortals is too high of an investment for the lack of production and the players of Dignitas are just full of unknowns. I would avoid everything about this game and spend money elsewhere.

Favorite Picks: Revenge (IMT: $6,200), PowerofEvil (IMT: $7,200)

Value Picks: Blue (DIG: $6,600), Biofrost (DIG: $5,200)

Cann’s Match Pick: Immortals

Game #5: Counter Logic Gaming v Cloud9

Game Breakdown: Much like Team Liquid, there is a feeling that Cloud9 hadn’t been living up to the expectations that they had at the beginning of 2022. With their updated roster they have ripped off four wins and unlike TL, they have begun to find their stride. Berserker has been an unspoken star for the LCS this year and I appreciate the work he can do in the late game. Why do I think CLG wins this then? It takes Cloud9 too long to win games. If you give CLG time to snowball small advantages in the early game and get Luger (ADC) scaling, they win games. CLG has proven they aren’t on the same level of EG and 100 Thieves, they have also proven that they can be a force in these best of 1 series. If you are looking for an upset on this slate, this is a great place to look.

Favorite Picks: Berserker (C9: $10,500/$7,000), Jensen (C9: $7,000)

Value Picks: Dhokla (CLG: $5,200), Contractz (CLG: $5,400), Counter Logic Gaming ($4,200)

Cann’s Match Pick: Counter Logic Gaming
