Wisconsin vs. #20 Michigan Predictions, Picks & Odds: CFB Week 6, 10/4
The Wisconsin Badgers travel to Ann Arbor to play the #20 Michigan Wolverines at the Big House in Week 6 of the CFB schedule.
Wisconsin aims to end its two-game losing streak and get back on track in conference play, while Michigan comes in as a heavy 17.5-point favorite at home. What do our Wisconsin vs. #20 Michigan picks have cooked up for Saturday?
Wisconsin vs. #20 Michigan Predictions for College Football Week 6, Saturday, 10/4
The Badgers have had a week to recover from a difficult September, while the Wolverines have just finished a bye week. The question is whether Michigan's firepower overwhelms them too soon or if Wisconsin's stingy defense can hold out long enough to cover.
That said, Michigan in the first half is the most alluring aspect here, not the full-game line. At DraftKings, the Wolverines are laying -9.5 before halftime, which seems more appropriate than the entire -17.5 game spread when making Wisconsin vs. #20 Michigan predictions.
Wisconsin vs. #20 Michigan Spread Pick: Wolverines -9.5 1H (-112 at DraftKings)
This season, Michigan has made a point of limiting turnovers, pounding the ball on the ground, and letting their front seven set the pace. The Wolverines are ranked in the top five nationally in terms of rushing efficiency, and running back Justice Haynes has been a force, averaging almost nine yards per carry in his most recent game against Nebraska.
The protection and run game in place have also made it simpler for rookie quarterback Bryce Underwood, who doesn't need to be perfect.
When you compare that to Wisconsin, the argument for a first-half play gets stronger. The Badgers are outside the top 100 in terms of overall offense, scoring only 20.8 points per game on average.
Since Billy Edwards Jr.'s injury, their quarterback situation has been precarious, and backup Danny O'Neil has had trouble stretching the field. Wisconsin's run game, which ranks last in the country, hasn't gotten much better. To put it another way, they don't have the quick-strike talent required to engage Michigan in an early punch-trade.
Michigan should be able to establish a double-digit lead by the half, even if Wisconsin's outstanding run defense slows the Wolverines down after the half. The Badgers will almost certainly need some time to settle into a groove due to their inconsistent offensive play, which might result in them stalling out on several early drives against this Wolverine front.
Jumping on weaker opponents, Michigan has won the first half in 31 of its last 40 conference games. The Wolverines' ability to conduct business in Ann Arbor is demonstrated by the fact that they have covered in nine of their last ten October home games.
As an underdog, Wisconsin has lost five of its past six games and has struggled early against ranked teams. Wisconsin's offense simply cannot keep up with the tempo, even when they play tight defense.
The Badgers' 27-10 loss against Maryland the last time out is a good example of this; despite holding the Terrapins to fewer than 75 rushing yards, they were behind by a significant margin at the half.
Anticipate a strong ground assault from Michigan, relying on Haynes and the offensive line to erode Wisconsin's front. After a few Badger three-and-outs are forced by the defense, the Wolverines should convert short fields into rapid scores.
If Wisconsin's defense gets more defensive in the second half, the Wolverines might not be able to cover the large full-game spread. However, Michigan's strong defense and powerful rushing offense should generate enough distance in the first half to cover -9.5 with some leeway, which is where our Wisconsin vs. #20 Michigan predictions will land.
