Oregon vs. USC Prediction: Saturday, September 26th

Saturday night brings us a Top 25 matchup between #20 Oregon and #12 USC. The former Pac-12 rivals are now battling it out in the Big Ten, and this weekend’s showdown carries plenty of conference weight. Let’s target the total and root for a high-scoring game. 

Under head coach Lincoln Riley, USC has one of the country’s most potent offenses. The Trojans are averaging 43 points and 500 total yards over four games so far. QB Jayden Maiava has this attack humming, with plenty of talent in the receiving corps. They also boast one of the best one-two backfield punches. 

The advanced stats also back up USC’s offensive output. The Trojans enter this game ranked second nationally in offensive success rate and 10th in EPA/Play. They should set the tone at home here, especially against a suspect Oregon defense. 

The Ducks have looked very vulnerable defensively this year. They allowed a whopping 554 total yards of offense and 39 points in the loss at Oklahoma State. The 27 points given up to Boise State at home in the opener were also eye-opening. Until we see the unit show up, it’s worth fading – especially against a dangerous offense like USC’s. 

Meanwhile, Oregon should move the ball and score its fair share. USC ranks 99th in defensive EPA/Play and 103rd in defensive success rate. In their past two games, the Trojans allowed 35 points and 460 total yards to Rutgers and then 30 points and 358 total yards to Louisiana. It’s a shaky defense, and Oregon will be its toughest test yet. 

It’s hard to see QB Dante Moore and his loaded receiving corps being kept quiet in this matchup. Wideouts Evan Stewart and Dakorian Moore can exploit a USC secondary that’s had plenty of issues against lesser competition. 

Grab the over in this matchup. Oregon and USC can both score 30+ points in what should be an offensive shootout. Notably, these teams combined for 69 points last year and 63 points in the prior meeting. 

 

 

 

Colorado vs. Baylor Prediction: Saturday, September 26th

Both Colorado and Baylor are 2-1 heading into this week’s Big 12 matchup. However, the teams seem to be heading in opposite directions despite having the same record. Let’s back Baylor to win convincingly and cover the spread as a home favorite. 

Baylor’s offense will get a boost with the return of quarterback DJ Lagway, who missed the past two games due to injury. In the season-opening loss to Auburn, the Bears put up 436 total yards with Lagway throwing for 333 yards. The offense moved the ball well, but turnovers and red-zone struggles were the problem. 

Lagway and the Bears should have no issues stringing together productive drives against Colorado this week. The Buffaloes rank 104th nationally in defensive EPA/Pass and 90th in defensive success rate. They also just allowed 423 total yards and 41 points to Northwestern on the road last week. 

A second straight road trip is not ideal for Colorado, especially with that shaky defense. Plus, in that loss to Northwestern, the Buffs put up only seven points in a poor showing. Their offense currently ranks 100th in EPA/Play and 91st in success rate. Meanwhile, Baylor brings in an underrated defense that’s 29th in success rate and 22nd in EPA/Play. 

This sets up to be a double-digit win for Baylor at home. Colorado performed terribly on the road last year, going 0-5 with four losses of 10+ points. Plus, the vibes are weird in Boulder right now as head coach Deion Sanders just dismissed some players from the program. The Buffs’ motivation on the road could be lacking this week.
