The Red River Rivalry is back at the Cotton Bowl this Saturday, featuring #1 Texas against Oklahoma in a classic college football showdown. Although rivalry games can be unpredictable, there seems to be a noticeable difference in performance between these two teams as they head into Week 6.

Texas comes in with an impressive 4-0 record, highlighted by a big victory over Ohio State, while Oklahoma struggles at 2-2, having failed to score more than 14 points in their last three games. That said, do our #1 Texas vs. Oklahoma picks see the Sooners being able to pull off the upset?

#1 Texas vs. Oklahoma Predictions for CFB Week 6, Saturday, 10/10

Texas recently secured a narrow 20-17 victory against Tennessee, where their defense stood out with 10 sacks and 12 tackles for loss, limiting the Volunteers to just 221 total yards. In contrast, Oklahoma's recent performances have been disappointing, suffering a lopsided 41-13 defeat to Georgia and only scoring 37 total points in their last three games.

Both teams had a bye week to prepare last weekend, which could add an interesting twist to the game. With Texas having one of the top defenses in the nation, the Sooners’ path on offense doesn’t get any easier. Oklahoma's defense has enough talent and potential to prevent a total blowout, but our #1 Texas vs. Oklahoma predictions believe that their offense hasn’t shown the ability to keep up with a team like Texas for the entire game.

#1 Texas vs. Oklahoma Expert Pick: Longhorns -7.5 (50% at Novig)

When looking to make #1 Texas vs. Oklahoma picks, the biggest concern in this matchup is Oklahoma's offense, which has really struggled this season. In their last three games, they haven't scored more than 14 points and have failed to gain 300 total yards in any of those contests. They rank extremely low in offensive success, and their performance against Georgia was lackluster at best, with only 296 total yards and four turnovers.

Now, they have to face Texas. The Longhorns just finished up dominating Tennessee defensively, recording 10 sacks and 12 tackles for loss while limiting the Volunteers to just 70 rushing yards. Colin Simmons was phenomenal, recording 5.5 sacks himself.

Oklahoma's offensive line will more than likely struggle to protect quarterback John Mateer from Texas' aggressive defense. Oklahoma has already turned the ball over ten times, while Texas has only committed five turnovers and forced five as well.

Texas has already proven they can handle high-pressure situations, as seen in their win against Ohio State earlier this season. While Oklahoma is a different challenge, I don't think Texas will be intimidated by the Red River Rivalry.

In fact, Texas has won three of the last four matchups, including a decisive 23-6 victory last season, where Mateer threw three interceptions, and the team only gained 258 total yards.

This year's Oklahoma offense seems to be struggling more than ever. That's why Texas at -7.5 looks like a good bet. I don't need Texas to completely dominate the game. I just need them to win by a touchdown and a field goal.

The Sooners can't rely on their running game to control the clock since it's not working well, and if they fall behind, Mateer will have to face a Texas defense that knows how to apply pressure.

I don't expect a high-scoring game, especially with the #1 Texas vs. Oklahoma odds having the total set around 39.5. A score like 24-10 or 27-13 would be enough for Texas to cover the spread. Even if Texas scores less than 24 points, they could still cover if Oklahoma's offense continues to look the way it has.

The rivalry makes me a bit cautious about betting more than a touchdown’s worth of points, but I feel confident in the Longhorns. Texas has a better defense, a more dependable offense, and has proven they can perform under pressure. There’s no reason for our #1 Texas vs. Oklahoma predictions to believe that Texas can’t win by double digits.
