This week brings with it the second trip to the fastest 1.5-mile track on the schedule in the form of Texas Motor Speedway. The AAA Texas 500 will be the last 500-mile race of the season and the last chance for those who are dominant on this size of track to lock in their ticket to the championship in Miami in two week’s time.

Texas isn’t the run of the mill 1.5-mile track though as there has never been less than a dozen lead changes in the 35-race history that Texas Motor Speedway presents. In addition to that the pole sitter hasn’t won here in 10 races, the last time was April of 2013 and Mr. Kyle Busch was the last one to do it. In general though 20 of the 35 race winners have started inside the top-five here with Kevin Harvick being the last one to do that in this race last November.

The track was repaved before last season so it is still coming in in general and the tires don’t typically wear too much here but the speeds are still as high as ever with 200+ mph topped routinely on the front stretch.

Drivers To Watch This Week

Kyle Busch - Busch has been very good here of late with two wins, three top-fives, and 159 laps led including winning here in April. The Big Three have dominated at these lengths of tracks and Busch is the best of them here in overall package he offers. A bit frustrated that his fast car in practice didn’t last during the race last week and looking to punch his ticket for Miami (officially) this might be the week for that to happen and his price tag is reasonable across both sites.

Kevin Harvick - This race last year was won by Mr. Harvick as he ran down MTJ in the final 20 laps and then simply ran away from the field after catching him. He has also finished in the top-10 each of the last five races here and has led 203 laps in that span, third-most in the field. Harvick’s 176 fastest laps are the most in the field as well. He mostly just drove around at Martinsville, until the very end when he made an appearance in the top-five for a time and now he will rely on a strong showing here to all but lock him into the championship race in two weeks.

Martin Truex Jr. - Truex has been so good at this distance in the last three seasons that it will be a shock to you to realize that he hasn’t won ever. He has three top-fives and four top-10s in the last five races at the track and a field-best 363 laps led but no wins to speak of. His 113.1 average rating is second-best in the field only behind the man that beat him in this race a year ago. He is pretty salty about how last week’s race ended whether rightfully so or not and that may have lit a fire under the 78-team that might just power him through to the championship once more in their final season.

Joey Logano - Logano has already locked himself into a trip to Miami at season’s end but now he gets to be a thorn in the side of those drivers still trying to lock their way in. In the last five trips to Texas the 22-car has finished in the top-10 five straight times and three top-fives in that span as well plus a slightly surprising 217 laps led which makes him second in that category. The 4.2 average finish is actually the best in the field as is his high rating of 140.6 in that span as well. His price bump on FanDuel puts him likely out of range for most lineups but the price on DraftKings is more reasonable.

Chase Elliott - Chase mostly hung in the backend of the top-10 for most of Martinsville race and that didn’t help him too much in the standings heading into Texas as he’s 31 points below the cut line. Chase has a very nice +13 PD here in the last five races and has two top-fives and four top-10s to his credit in that span. The number of laps led matches his car number this year at just nine but the solid finishes are promising. He may need more than that to feel better heading to Phoenix and its new layout. His price is better on DK than FD but he is still workable depending on starting spot and what he shows in practice.
