Play Super-Flex Salary Cap NFL Football

As the pre-season is underway and you are beginning your in-depth research for all of your fantasy leagues this season, keep in mind that there are so many great ways to utilize all of the knowledge you are garnering from our great content staff here at Fantasy Alarm. Beyond the traditional season-long league with a draft and even daily fantasy sports, we are treated to “hybrid” leagues and contests that incorporate some of the best parts of each style of play into a different kind of contest. One of the best out there is Head2Head’s offering of their NFL Salary Cap game. This article will serve as an introduction to what it is and in future installments, we’ll start delving into the strategies and specifics to help you win.

Similar to the College Salary Cap game that we introduced earlier this week, the NFL version challenges you to come up with a ten-player roster each week to compete in head-to-head contests with league mates. You’ll battle through the regular season, doing your best to adapt to the landscape as it evolves each week - ultimately, making the playoffs and winning that coveted $20,000 grand prize.

THE BASICS

First, you’ll want to get signed up here: www.fantasyalarm.com/h2h

Once you are in, you’ll notice that you are tasked to come up with an initial roster. You can simply accept one given to you and we’ll make changes before kickoff in September. Each week, you’ll field a team of ten (10) in the following positions and under a $100 Million salary cap:

  • 1 Quarterback (QB)

  • 3 Running Backs (RB)

  • 3 Wide Receivers (WR) or Tight Ends (TE)

  • 1 Flex (RB, WR or TE)

  • 1 Kicker (K)

  • 1 Team Defense (DEF)

Each player is assigned a salary, similar to the DFS sites and that salary changes throughout the season based on certain factors, including past performance, future prognostications, injury status and matchup, to name a few.  The fun part about this set-up is that it rewards forward-thinking. Take a player with your initial roster that you think it underpriced and stick with him for a while, others will be paying more to get them on their roster.

SCORING SYSTEM

The most important thing to note about the H2H scoring system is that it is a “PPR” (point per reception) model. This makes the wide receivers, tight end and pass-catching running backs that much more valuable and must be taken into consideration when building your weekly roster.  Also, ALL touchdowns are worth six points. Meaning, Quarterbacks get six full points for a passing touchdown. This sways the value back towards the quarterbacks. Other than than, the yardage is standard (0.04 per passing yard; 0.1 per rush/receiving yard).  We’ll have more strategy-focused articles for this model coming out as we get closer to the season and there we’ll dive more into the value that this scoring system places on certain positions/players.

THE COMPETITION

Once you join up, you can join a public league with complete strangers or a “Buddy League” with friends, family, colleagues, or anybody else that you can convince to join. You are placed in one of four 8-team divisions within a 32-team league. You’ll take on one opponent each week, hence “head2head”, and you are ranked within your division by wins accumulated and overall in the league by total points.

You’ll play a full seventeen (17) week regular season with a new opponent each week. The goal is to 1.) win the entire league by scoring the most cumulative points and 2.) make the playoffs.  To make the playoffs, you can just be ranked in the top two of your eight-team division or earn one of the three “wild-card” spots. To get a wild-card spot, you’ll need to finish in the top-three in overall points among the remaining non-divisional qualifiers. Simple enough.  Once in the playoffs - which run congruent with the actual NFL playoffs - all of your past performance in the league is thrown out the window. You have your team and you’ll compete with all of the playoff teams from across all leagues for that hefty payday ($25,000) we discussed earlier.

TRANSACTIONS

Another interesting part of this style of game is how you make transactions. Again, if you can get a player early, that player's salary is locked in until you choose to or are forced to because of a bye week. Each week, you can swap out players for others at their positions. These trades do cost you each time, so you’ll want to perform these add/drops wisely. I’d suggest taking advantage of the Strength of Schedule tool here at FA to determine who has a few solid matchups over coming weeks when making selections.

If you are looking for a new way to play season-long fantasy football, literally ALL season long, then you have found your game. Be sure to join us as we look to dominate the field this season in this Head2Head format. I’ll be adding a few more strategy articles specifically for this style of game as we progress to the kickoff of the NFL season.
