2023 Player Outlook
Prior to 2022, the most innings Wright had pitched in a single year in the majors was 38.0 in the Covid year of 2020. So to say last year’s 180.1 innings in the rotation was anything other than a surprise is a bit of a stretch. In fact, previously he’d thrown a total of 70 innings over 21 appearances before last year’s 30-start year that led to a 21-5 record. The 3.19 ERA wasn’t quite indicative of his year either as the other metrics like xERA, FIP, xFIP, and SIERA all have his marks in the mid-threes. Much like the pitcher in front of him in the Braves rotation, Max Fried, Wright isn’t a huge strikeout guy with a career K/9 mark of 8.38 and last year’s 8.68. Wright is a candidate for regression in 2023 in the ratios and wins. An ERA of 3.75 with a 1.30 WHIP and about 13 wins seems right for the righty in 2023.
