New York Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Predictions

It was not a good start after the 4-Nations Faceoff break for the Rangers or the Penguins yesterday as each team allowed 8 total goals in blowout losses. This is rather on brand for both teams though as they’ve both been dreadful on defense overall this season with the Rangers allowing 3.25 goals per game on the road and the Penguins allowing 3.68 goals per game at home (Most in NHL). That has me eyeing up the total for this matchup today as the backup goaltenders should also be playing. 

The Penguins this season have gone over the total in 16 of 27 games this season and have an expected goals against mark of 3.25 overall. This is due to odd man rushes, sub par goaltending and just poor defense all around. The Rangers aren’t very good either and the Pittsburgh offense on home ice is generated over 3.3 expected goals per game with New York already having gone over the total in 14 of 26 road games this season. The total of 5.5 is just not priced correctly either so let’s hammer that before the line moves to 6.
