NHL Picks, Predictions & Best Bets Today, 1/9
We're at a really interesting time in the NHL season, with teams truly showing who they are, the 4 Nations tournament right around the corner, and the trade deadline here before you know it.
Devils vs. Rangers Prediction: Thursday, January 9th
I don't want to exaggerate, but Jack Hughes owns the New York Rangers. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration but he routinely puts up big games against them and we'll look for that to continue tonight.
Over the course of his career, Hughes has 15 goals and 26 total points in 22 games against the Rangers. That's been highlighted recently with four goals in two games this season. Considering the Rangers have allowed 3.19 Goals per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations over the last two weeks, which is the second-worst in the league, Hughes is primed for another big game.
Even if this game wasn't against the Rangers, I'd still be interested in Hughes' goal prop tonight. He's an elite goal-scorer and has had no goals over his last six games, but he had a very solid 27 shots on goal over that time. He continues to fire the puck, and we get his goal prop at solid odds.

Sabres vs. Senators Prediction: Thursday, January 9th
The Ottawa Senators are back at home after a very long road trip which started all the way back on December 17th. World Juniors was played in Ottawa, so they were sent packing but they're back at home tonight to take on the Buffalo Sabres.
They're currently on a three-game losing streak but I like this matchup against the Sabres to bounce back and put up some goals. This season, the Senators are generating 60.07 Total Shot Attempts per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the 10th highest in the league.
As for the Sabres, they are allowing 28.13 shots per 60 minutes in five-on-five situations, which is the ninth-worst in the league. This should put the Senators in a good spot to pile up the shots on goal, which leads us directly to Brady Tkachuk.
When it comes to shots for the Senators, it all starts with Tkachuk, who has a whopping 158 shots on goal this season, while the next player is only at 90 shots on goal. He has 68 more shots on goal than the next player, so we know where to look for a shot prop.
Tkachuk is averaging 4.05 shots on goal this season while seeing time on the first forward line and the first power-play unit. It's a good matchup for Tkachuk to rack up the shots.

- Brady Tkachuk Over 3.5 Shots on Goal (-135 on DraftKings)
