This is a guaranteed contest, so the $25K prize doesn't shrink if the field doesn't fill. That's a $25K top prize on a $5 entry.

How Does NFL Survivor Work?

Survivor is one of the most familiar formats in fantasy football, but this version doubles the challenge with two picks every week. Here's how it works, in order:

1. Pick two. Each week, select two NFL teams you think will win their games outright. There's no point spread involved; your teams just need to win.
2. Survive. If both of your teams win, you advance to the next week. A loss, a tie, or a missed pick on either team eliminates you.
3. Use each team once. Once you pick a team, it's gone for the rest of the contest. With two picks per week, you burn through teams twice as fast as a standard Survivor contest.
4. Outlast everyone. The last remaining entry wins the full $25K. If every remaining entry is eliminated in the same week, or multiple entries survive the final week, those entries split the prize equally.

This isn't salary-cap DFS, and you're not playing against the house. Every other entry in this contest is another member of the Fantasy Alarm community, competing to be the last one standing.

Bloody Survivor Rules That Can Knock You Out

• Ties eliminate you. A tie counts the same as a loss, so a team has to win outright.
• Missed picks eliminate you. If you don't submit both picks before the deadline, you're out.
• Running out of teams eliminates you. If you don't have enough unused teams left to make your picks in a given week, that counts as an incorrect pick.
• There are no tiebreakers. If multiple entries are declared winners, they split the prize in equal shares.

Our NFL Survivor Picks for Week 9

We're starting the contest with the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans. Both are road teams, and neither is among the biggest favorites on the Week 9 board. That's by design: Kansas City (-10 vs. the Jets), Seattle (-11.5 vs. Arizona) and San Francisco (-9.5 vs. Las Vegas) are the heaviest favorites of the week, and we'd rather save teams like that for the later weeks when the field is thinner, and every pick matters more.

Week 9 Survivor Pick 1: Dallas Cowboys (at Indianapolis Colts)

Dallas heads to Lucas Oil Stadium for a 1:00 PM ET kickoff against a Colts team that's in tank mode. Indianapolis is trading away key assets, and a roster being stripped down midseason is exactly the kind of opponent we want to target in Survivor.

The Cowboys are coming off a shocking Week 8 loss to the Cardinals, and we expect a motivated response. With Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb leading the offense, Dallas has a clear talent edge against a Colts team that's looking ahead to next season. Using the Cowboys now also keeps our strongest options in reserve for the back half of the contest.

Week 9 Survivor Pick 2: Houston Texans (at Los Angeles Chargers)

Houston comes out of its bye week rejuvenated and rested, and it gets a Chargers team that's heading in the opposite direction. Los Angeles was trounced at home in Week 8, and that came right after its own bye, which is a troubling sign for a team that had an extra week to prepare.

The Texans are 5.5-point favorites at SoFi Stadium in the 4:05 PM ET window, and the game's 41.5-point total is one of the lowest on the Sunday slate. That points to a game where Houston doesn't need a shootout to win. Like Dallas, the Texans give us a solid Week 9 pick without burning one of the elite teams we'll want later in the contest.

NFL Survivor Strategy for a Two-Pick Format

• Plan your path, not just this week. Two picks per week means you'll use teams much faster than in a standard Survivor contest. Map out which strong teams have the best matchups in future weeks before you spend them now.
• Save the elite teams for later. As the field shrinks, the weeks get harder. Holding a couple of top teams for the back half of the contest gives you safe options when you need them most.
• Never pick both sides of the same game. One of those teams is guaranteed to lose, which guarantees your elimination.
• Account for ties. Because ties eliminate you, games projected to be close carry extra risk in this format.
• Use multiple entries to spread risk. With up to 150 entries allowed, varying your picks across entries keeps one upset from wiping you out completely.
• Check the bye weeks. The Steelers and Titans are on bye in Week 9, so they aren't available this week.
