This is always a tough position to be in as a fan. The late-season balancing act when your team is not very good. You want to see some signs of life out of your rookie quarterbacks like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders. But, at this stage of the game, you are also kind of rooting that you have the best possible draft pick.

And that’s where we stand with the Tennessee Titans at the Cleveland Browns this week. The Browns are 3-9 and technically not eliminated from the playoffs. But the odds are not good. The Titans are 1-11 and are completely eliminated. This week, they’ll do battle in an event that Vegas thinks could be the lowest scoring of the year. Let’s dig into the narratives and data to see what kind of predictions or picks we might be able to make for Week 14!

Titans vs. Browns Predictions For Sunday 1:00 PM ET, NFL Week 14

These two teams don’t square up often - only twice now over the last five years. The Browns won both of those matchups in 2023 and 2020. Given that both teams are currently starting rookie quarterbacks, the outcomes of those games really don’t have much of an impact on how we view this week’s matchup.

The Browns are 3-9 on the season overall. But they are 1-1 in the Shedeur Sanders era, with their win coming against the Las Vegas Raiders and the loss against the San Francisco 49ers. The Titans have an even worse record behind rookie QB Cam Ward at 1-11. Their lone win was a 22-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Tennessee Titans: Brock Purdy Is Back

This Titans offense is still searching for its identity. And as part of that, they are rolling out a lot of different personnel. They rotate two tight ends in Chig Okonkwo and Gunnar Helm. They use two backs in Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears. With Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett out of the picture, they’ve settled in with Eric Ayomanor, Van Jefferson, and Chimere Dike as the wide receivers.

It’s not a secret that the Titans have been one of the worst defenses in the league. Granted, the offense has not given them a lot of time to rest. They’re a bottom-10 defense against both the pass and the run when you look at Pro Football Focus’s grades or FTN Fantasy’s DVOA stat. Despite that, they’ve actually been pretty solid against opposing tight ends for much of the season.

Cleveland Browns: Deshaun Watson Returns to Practice

Between the Kenny Pickett trade, the Joe Flacco trade, rookie Dillon Gabriel starting, and now rookie Shedeur Sanders starting, you might have even forgotten about Deshaun Watson. But he recently made his return to practice, opening his 21-day window to be activated. Whether or not he’s activated this year, he’ll likely be with the team in some capacity next year, given his contract.

Either way, he’s not starting this week, so that won’t affect us much. As Kevin Stefanski likes, the Browns have leaned on two-tight-end sets for much of the season. In fact, in the two games where Sanders has started, Harold Fannin has led the team in routes run, targets, receptions, yards, first downs, and touchdowns. Between Sanders, Fannin, and running back Quinshon Judkins, it’s been a rookie takeover lately.

On defense, the Browns have been very good lately. It started primarily against the run, but they’ve been just as formidable against the pass as of late. It’s impossible to ignore the disruptiveness of pass rusher Myles Garrett, who is all but a lock for Defensive Player of the Year at this stage.

Titans vs. Browns: Harold Fannin Over 3.5 Receptions (-136 at DraftKings Sportsbook)

The books don’t want us betting this prop. Some of the books aren’t even carrying it, others have it at -150. They want us to be the over on yards or anytime touchdown for Fannin, but they don’t want us betting receptions - because it’s too good a bet.

Since Shedeur Sanders took over, Harold Fannin Jr is leading the team in routes, receptions, targets, receiving yards, first downs, touchdowns, broken tackles, and passer rating while targeted. Not the tight end group, all pass catchers on the team. The thing is, he’s doing it on only a 2.7-yard average depth of target (hence why we are hesitant to bet the over on yards). They are having Fannin run short routes out of the slot to help their rookie QB get acclimated, and Sanders has been pretty locked on to him.

It also just so happens that the Titans just moved rookie Kevin Winston Jr. to nickel corner last week, where he was picked on with 7 catches for 7 targets. A perfect passer rating is 158.3. In college, Winston actually left Penn State’s game vs. Bowling Green early last year with an injury, so he never really got to square off with Fannin - they’ll get their chance this week, and I think it favors Fannin.
