There’s nothing like a loaded afternoon slate. This week, with no bye weeks, we get four games in that 4 PM window. And the Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams are one of the more intriguing matchups as both teams are looking to compete but have some new faces in key spots.

The offensive weapons are certainly a bit different than we’ve come to expect. Sure, Puka Nacua and Nico Collins will be there. But the Rams are without Cooper Kupp for the first time in years as they’ve replaced him with Davante Adams. And the Texans will attempt to fill the void left by Stefon Diggs with rookies like Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel

Texans vs. Rams Predictions For NFL Week 1, Sunday 4:25 PM ET

These teams do not play often, given than they are in different conferences. In fact, since the Houston Texans became a football team, they’ve only ever squared up against each other give times. The Rams have won four of five games with the lone Texans win coming in 2009.

That doesn’t really matter much to us however. The last time these two teams played was in 2021 - before Texans’ QB C.J. Stroud was even in the league. So there’s not much to draw from history-wise.

Houston Texans: Texans Already Banged Up

The Joe Mixon injury saga has been mysterious all year. He suffered a foot injury while away from the team that landed him on the NFI list. That saw them bring in Nick Chubb and draft Woody Marks. Meanwhile, their recent acquisition Christian Kirk is set to miss this game with a hamstring injury. That could throw their two rookie wide receivers from Iowa State into the fire. Jayden Higgins could play outside across from Nico Collins with Jaylin Noel in the slot.

The Houston Texans do have a tough defense. Key star players Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Stingley should be good to go. They brought veteran safety CJ Gardner-Johnson over from the Super Bowl Champion Eagles to shore up the backend and bring a little bit of the trash talk and toughness to the table.

Los Angeles Rams: Davante Adams' LA Debut

The Rams made the bold decision this offseason to move away from fan favorite Cooper Kupp. Not only could he not stay healthy, but he had a bit of an overlapping skillset with Puka Nacua. On top of being a guy who has averaged 10 targets per game for the last seven years, Davante Adams brings a new element of redzone ability to the scheme. Adams is actually eighth all time in receiving touchdowns for a WR and has had double-digits in six of the last eight years.

The Rams were middle of the pack last year in terms of points per game allowed, sitting right at 15th. They expect to take a step forward this year led by young pass rusher Jared Verse, their first round pick from last year. In fact, the Rams had one of the best defensive drafts we’ve seen in awhile last year with guys like Kamren Kinchens and Braden Fiske as well. Les Snead is one of the best GMs in the league.

Texans vs. Rams: Davante Adams Over 57.5 Receiving Yards (-115 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

This is a misconception that we take advantage of all the time - both in betting and fantasy football. Whoever is perceived as the “WR2” offers a discount. With many teams, there is a steep drop off from the WR1 to the WR2 so that makes a lot of sense. Here, there is not.

We don’t know how they plan to move Puka Nacua and Davante Adams around the formation. We don’t know who the Texans will prioritize (though, with the whole world suggesitng Nacua is the WR1, you’d expect him to draw tougher coverage, right?)

What we do know is that Sean McVay loves Davante Adams. He’s been showing the whole team highlights of what he can do. Nacua has been respectful of Adams as well, letting him have number 17 and also letting him go first through all the drills as a veteran. Which makes sense because he’s a legend and, as we mentioned, he has averaged 10 targets a game. Adams once complained about not getting enough targets in a win when he was with the Raiders. I think both of these guys can feast in this offense - Nacua’s line isn’t bad at 70.5 receiving yards but Adams at 57.5 is a smash.
