Over the last three years, only two teams have represented the NFC in the Super Bowl. The Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers. And those two NFC powerhouses will square off this Sunday on FOX at 4:30 PM ET in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs.

Both are coming from two different places. The 49ers fought hard and lost against division rival Seattle Seahawks, barely losing out on a first-round bye. The Eagles decided to rest starters in Week 18. yet coasted into the three seed anyway. That, along with the injuries and other narratives, will factor into our predictions and picks for 49ers vs. Eagles for the NFL playoffs this Sunday!

49ers vs. Eagles Predictions For Sunday 4:30 PM ET, NFL Wild Card Weekend

These teams have been perennial favorites in the NFL. And that has seem them play more often than many non-division teams, including a playoff game in 2023. They’ve played four times since 2020 with each team winning twice, though they haven’t played in two years.

The Eagles are coming in as the NFC East division winner and the home team. They also rested started in Week 18 to be ready for this one. The 49ers, on the other hand, battled and lost in Week 18 to the Seattle Seahawks. That’s how they ended up on the road here while the Seahawks got the bye.

San Francisco 49ers: Getting Healthy On Offense

The 49ers' offense has seen stretches with no Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and Trent Williams this year. Surprisingly, Christian McCaffrey was the lone one to stay healthy this year after many attempted to predict injury for him. Guys like Williams and Pearsall are a little banged up, but they are expected to have the key pieces all together this week.

That hasn’t been that case for the defense. They not only lost starting linebacker Fred Warner, but they also lost backup Tatum Bethune. That’s left them reeling a bit, having to sign Eric Kendricks out of free agency to step up and make some stops in the run game.

Philadelphia Eagles: Well Rested

The Eagles could have jockeyed for playoff position in Week 18. Instead they opted to rest their starters and get guys healthy for the playoffs, leaving things up to chance. Lucky for them, the Detroit Lions beat the Chicago Bears which gave the Eagles the three seed anyway. So it all worked out in their favor in the end. Assuming Lane Johnson can go, the team should be fairly healthy for this tilt.

Per usual, the Eagles defense has been a rock-solid unit. DVOA over at FTN Fantasy, which attempts to adjust for strength of schedule, has them ranked top-10 once again. They’ve been especially tough against opposing tight ends this year armed with guys like Zack Baun and Cooper DeJean over middle.

49ers vs. Eagles: George Kittle Under 57.5 Receiving Yards (-115 at BetMGM Sportsbook)

George Kittle is easily the best tight end remaining in these NFL playoffs. There’s no doubt that he’s a great player. But even great players can struggle if the matchups are tough. And, by some metrics, this is the toughest possible matchup for tight ends.

For instance, the Eagles are allowing just under 30 yards per game to tight end at 29.8 yards - that’s second only to the Bills at 29.6. We mentioned FTN’s DVOA stat earlier and, in that stat, the Eagles are far and away the toughest matchup. DVOA attempts to adjust for strength of schedule/difficulty of opponent, and the Eagles DVOA vs. the tight end is -59.9%. To put that in perspective, only two other teams are below -15% (the Texans at -31.7% and the Rams at -22.9%).

Kittle has had a number of good games against really favorable tight end matchups.  The Colts, Cardinals, Panthers, and Titans have been terrible against the position. But the Seahawks with Julian Love and Nick Emmanwori gave Kittle a hard time last week, holding him to just 29 yards despite seven targets. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles gave him a tough time as well.
