49ers vs. Browns Predictions For Sunday 1:00 PM ET, NFL Week 13

Given these teams are in different conferences, they rarely square off. This will mark only the second time they’ve played in the last five years with the most recent meeting coming in 2023. The Browns won that 19-17. The Browns have actually won five of the last seven and lead the all time series between the two teams 13-8.

The Browns are 3-8 on the season and at the bottom of the AFC North. But they are 1-0 with Shedeur Sanders as starter, having defeated the Las Vegas Raiders last week. The 49ers are 8-4 which, in the tough NFC West, currently has them in third. They have won three of their last four with the lone loss coming to the division leading Rams.

San Francisco 49ers: Brock Purdy Is Back

Brock Purdy missed a big chunk of time this year with a toe injury. Luckily for him, Kyle Shanahan always seems to have a serviceable backup QB on hand with Kyle Shanahan keeping the team afloat. This time it was Mac Jones. Now they not only have Brock Purdy back but also Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall. They’re still missing Brandon Aiyuk but they have the pieces they need to operate.

On defense it’s a bit of a different story. Not only did they lose middle linebacker and top tackler Fred Warner, they recently lost his backup Tatum Bethune to a high ankle sprain as well. Bethune was averaging double digit combined tackles in Warner’s absence. That has seen Curtis Robinson step into that mike linebacker role though they did sign Eric Kendricks to the practice squad and are hoping to get him ramped up soon.

Cleveland Browns: The Shedeur Sanders Era

The Browns have officially named Shedeur Sanders as their starting quarterback. And, so far as the starter, he’s 1-0. That was against the lowly Las Vegas Raiders, of course, but still - we have to give rookies the benefit of the doubt in such a small sample size game. He’ll have other stud rookies like Harold Fannin and Quinshon Judkins at his disposal.

On defense the Browns have been rock solid - especially against the run. They’re a top five defense based on most metrics. But FTN Fantasy’s DVOA stat, which attempts to account for strength of schedule, has them graded as the top NFL defense against the run. Myles Garrett is also a strong defensive player of the year candidate, creating a lot of pressure on pass downs.

The 49ers should be able to supplement the run game by dumping it down to Christian McCaffrey but the winds could make it tough throw the ball down field. Brock Purdy has historically had a difficult time in inclement weather and he’s coming off a game last week where he threw three interceptions against the Carolina Panthers.

On the other side you have Shedeur Sanders in his second ever start. The 49ers defense isn’t quite what it once was but they are plenty capable enough of confusing a rookie quarterback. I’d consider betting the 49ers to cover the spread here but I’m just not sure enough points will be scored in general to get there.
