It was yet another Sunday without any NFL games, and yet the league still stole the spotlight. Although the free agency legal tampering period begins today, there were a multitude of high-profile storylines, including the DK Metcalf trade from the Seahawks to the Steelers. It’s a massive one not only in itself, but also for the future of the Steelers roster.

Check out exactly what we mean and how one of the most significant and earlier dominoes can affect the rest of the NFL offseason.

DK Metcalf To The Steelers - Seahawks Trade Star WR

By now, most fans have seen the DK Metcalf trade to Steelers. The news came shortly after he requested a trade from the Seahawks when the team decided to cut long-time WR and partner in crime Tyler Lockett. Seattle has also traded QB Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, so it’s clear that an entire revamp is underway.

As for the Steelers, we already knew that they weren’t planning on entering next season with both QBs Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, so now, only one of them will have the dynamic duo of DK Metcalf and George Pickens. Oh yeah, Russell Wilson has already had chemistry with DK Metcalf in Seattle.

While that would further suggest that Wilson will be the guy, that’s far from a foregone conclusion. The DK Metcalf trade was a monster one, but it could also be the catalyst for the team signing, perhaps, QB Aaron Rodgers? Maybe even QB Sam Darnold? This could truly be an entirely new-look Steelers roster come the 2025-26 season.

Actually, it could be as early as today or tomorrow, as those QBs and others will likely be moved that soon.

Why Did The Steelers Get DK Metcalf?

The DK Metcalf trade was no doubt a huge one, and while surprising in terms of it happening in general, it’s not a surprise as to why a team would want him. Even those not fans of the Seahawks know that he’s an absolute genetic freak that is an unmatched combination of size and speed.

His physicality and possession skills are perfect opposite a WR like George Pickens, who can create those big, explosive plays. Of course, DK Metcalf has been known for those long TD catches too.

With that in mind, the Steelers roster construction should now also improve the running game for RB Najee Harris, as teams will be forced to deal with the weapons on the outside thanks to this DK Metcalf trade.

What Did The Seahawks Get For DK Metcalf?

Why the Steelers, or any team, would make a DK Metcalf trade seems quite obvious given his ability. So, what did the Seahawks get for DK Metcalf that made it seem worthwhile?

They’ll be receiving Pittsburgh’s second round pick in this upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, and the teams will also swap their picks in the sixth and seventh rounds.

DK Metcalf Trade Grade

When it comes to a DK Metcalf trade grade, of course, it depends which side of the coin you’re on. From the Steelers roster perspective, it’s one that should be considered a great one, a B+ at worst.

Although Pittsburgh gave up this year’s second round pick, this is not a draft considered to be littered with generational talent at WR, especially not beyond the first round. Only time will tell if that’s accurate or not, but based on how the rest of the Steelers roster has experienced talent at skill positions, this DK Metcalf trade absolutely made sense for them.

While that would suggest a bad DK Metcalf trade grade for the Seahawks (C+), if they fully commit to the reconstruction of their offense, it may pay off in the long run. As even Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin says, they want volunteers, not hostages.

A disgruntled superstar WR that just saw his fellow WR and starting QB is likely to perform at his best, so getting at least something from the DK Metcalf trade is better than eating the final year of his contract worth $18 million.

New DK Metcalf Contract: One Of The Highest Paid WR In NFL

Speaking of that aforementioned contract, DK Metcalf was in the final year of his three-year extension that he signed with the Seahawks in 2022. Not only did the Steelers not see an issue with that, but they also made him among the highest-paid WR in the NFL.

After making the DK Metcalf trade on Sunday, reports are that he will be getting a five-year, $150 million contract! It will be interesting to see how Pittsburgh dishes out the rest of the money that they can. Will the Steelers roster also feature Aaron Rodgers before the week is over? Will they stick with the reuniting of Russell Wilson and DK Metcalf?

Those questions will almost certainly be answered in the coming days, so be sure to keep an eye on the Fantasy Alarm NFL free agency tracker.
