Karl-Anthony Towns NBA Underdog Pick: Higher 19.5 Points
The Knicks are 0-3, but Towns hasn't been the problem. He scored 19 points with 12 rebounds in just 24 foul-plagued minutes in the opener, then put up 22 and 10 at Boston and 22 and 14 against Orlando on Sunday. He's averaging 21.0 points on 62.2% shooting.
His role has only grown as New York searches for answers. Towns played 37 and 33 minutes in the last two games, and the defending champions need his scoring with their offense averaging about 102 points per game. He's been efficient inside and out, shooting 45.5% from three.
The matchup opens up for him, too. Detroit will be without All-NBA center Jalen Duren, who is out at least two weeks with a hamstring strain, leaving Paul Reed and John Collins to handle the middle. That's a big drop in size and physicality against a 7-footer.
New York is a 3.5-point favorite with a 218.5 total, so this projects as a tight, grinding game where Towns should see heavy minutes. Towns at Higher 19.5 points leads off our card of NBA props for Tuesday.
Ja Morant NBA Underdog Pick: Higher 5.5 Assists
Morant has embraced a new role in Portland. After being traded from Memphis this summer, he's taken a step back as a scorer and leaned into distributing, handing out eight assists in 23 minutes in the opener against Phoenix and seven more in 27 minutes in Friday's win at Sacramento.
He's a career 7.4 assists-per-game player, and he averaged 8.1 assists in his 20 games last season. Even sharing the ball with Damian Lillard and Deni Avdija, he's cleared this line by at least 1.5 assists in both games despite modest minutes.
The one risk is playing time. Head coach Micah Nori has shown he's willing to sit his stars late in games, and Morant is averaging just 25.0 minutes per game. Even so, he's generating 14 potential assists per game, so he's getting volume in limited time. But Tuesday's game should be competitive, with the Lakers favored by just 2.5 and a total around 236, which keeps the pace up and the assist chances coming.
