Fantasy Baseball Injury Report This Week
Yes, fantasy baseball managers also get to relax for a few days during the MLB All-Star break and festivities, but it’s also important to keep a pulse on updates regarding key MLB injuries during this time. Austin Riley’s trip to the IL opens the door for Nacho Alvarez Jr. to get some playing time, while the Yankees are hoping that Max Fried’s blister doesn’t impact the beginning of the second half. Luis Gil and Shane McClanahan continue to look sharp in their respective rehab assignments, while Houston will prepare for life without Jake Meyers in the outfield for the next 3+ weeks.
As you prepare to finalize your fantasy baseball lineups for the upcoming week, don’t forget to take a look at James Grande’s best waiver wire pickups, and tune in to the Caught Stealing Podcast later this week with Howard Bender and yours truly for all things fantasy baseball!
MLB Injury Report: Starting Pitchers
Max Fried, New York Yankees - Finger
Fried’s last start before the break ended early due to a blister on his left index finger.
Blake Snell, Los Angeles Dodgers - Shoulder
Snell’s next rehab start will come on July 15. He worked up to 31 pitches in his last start on July 10, striking out four batters across two scoreless innings.
Luis Gil, New York Yankees - Lat
Gil was sharp in his rehab start on Sunday, striking out six batters over 3.1 IP.
Zach Eflin, Baltimore Orioles - Back
Eflin completed four innings in his rehab start on the 13th, throwing 58 pitches in that outing. He may only need one more outing before being activated, but TBD on that timeline.
Shane McClanahan, Tampa Bay Rays - Triceps
McClanahan worked up to 36 pitches on Sunday in his second rehab start, recording three of his five outs via strikeout.
Hunter Dobbins, Boston Red Sox - Knee
Dobbins suffered a torn ACL while covering first base. He’ll hit the injured list, and his 2025 season has come to an end. Across 13 appearances (11 GS), Dobbins posted a 4-1 record with a 4.13 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.
Edward Cabrera, Miami Marlins - Elbow
Cabrera was removed earlier for his last start with what the team is calling posterior elbow discomfort. The MRI revealed no significant damage, and the hope is that he can avoid the IL.
MLB Injury Report: Hitters
Yordan Alvarez, Houston Astros - Hand
Houston fans - mark your calendars for July 17. That’s the date when Alvarez will be re-evaluated, with the hope of clearing him to resume swinging a bat.
Jeremy Pena, Houston Astros - Rib
Sounds like Pena’s absence might not extend too far beyond the All-Star break. However, can we really trust Houston’s medical staff? I’ll believe it when I see it…
Austin Riley, Atlanta Braves - Abdomen
Riley was placed on the injured list with a strained right abdomen. Nacho Alvarez should see the majority of the ABs at the hot corner during Riley’s absence.
Oneil Cruz, Pittsburgh Pirates - Hip
Cruz is dealing with a bit of a hip issue, but he’s still slated to compete in Monday’s Home Run Derby, so it can’t be that bad, right? Right!?
Ha-Seong Kim, Tampa Bay Rays - Foot
Kim’s season got off to a late start, but since returning, it’s just been one thing after another! The most recent ailment was caused by a foul ball off his foot. X-rays were negative, so hopefully a few days off at the break will be enough for Kim.
Jake Meyers, Houston Astros - Calf
Meyers has been dealing with a calf issue for a bit now, and he’ll finally head to the injured list. The expectation is that his absence will be at least three weeks.
Sal Frelick, Milwaukee Brewers - Hamstring
Frelick has reportedly been playing with a sore hamstring, and he aggravated it while making a nice catch on Sunday. Hopefully, a few days off are enough to settle things down.
Ezequiel Tovar, Colorado Rockies - Oblique
The expectation is that Tovar will return to Colorado after the All-Star break.
Lars Nootbaar, St. Louis Cardinals - Side
Nootbaar was placed on the injured list on Sunday with discomfort in his left side.
