Best MLB Strikeout Props Today

Troy Melton Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-120)

The matchup for Melton today comes with him riding one of the best rookie seasons in baseball, and with a genuine roster edge working in his favor. Melton is 5-1 with a sparkling 1.80 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 55.2 innings, an 8.2 K/9 and 23.6% strikeout rate, and he's been especially dominant at home, with a sub-1.00 ERA across his last four starts at Comerica Park. His last outing was clean, 5.2 innings, one earned run, four hits against the Angels.

Today he stays home against a Kansas City lineup that just got noticeably weaker; star shortstop Bobby Witt landed on the 10-day IL this week with lower back tightness and will not be in the lineup. The Royals strike out against right-handers at a modest 21.6% clip even with their MVP candidate in the order, and losing his bat only makes this a softer matchup. Combine that with Melton's own swing-and-miss and command combination, missing bats at a 24% clip while limiting walks to 7%, and this is a real path to clear the number. Lock it in.

Shane Bieber Under 4.5 Strikeouts (-155)

The matchup for Bieber today comes with real workload caution attached, and the underlying numbers back up the caution. Bieber is 1-1 with a 5.70 ERA and just 19 strikeouts in 23.2 innings across five starts this season as he continues working back into form, a late debut on June 23 after injury. His last start was actually his best of the year, six scoreless innings and six strikeouts against the White Sox on just 80 pitches, but detailed pitch-count tracking shows he's completed 17 outs in a start just once in five tries this season, a sign the leash remains short.

The Statcast profile is even more concerning than the ERA suggests. Bieber is allowing a .426 expected weighted on-base average with a 53.2% hard-hit rate and a 91.7 mph average exit velocity this season, quality-of-contact numbers that rank among the worst of any starter in baseball, meaning the results have actually been better than the underlying process. Today he gets Tampa Bay, and the Rays have one of the lowest team strikeout rates in the league against right-handers this season at just 19.3%, a genuinely contact-oriented, low-whiff lineup. A short-leash pitcher getting hit hard even in his good starts, running into one of the toughest strikeout matchups on the board, is about as clean a fit for the under as this slate offers. Take it.

Brandon Pfaadt Under 3.5 Strikeouts (-115)

The matchup for Pfaadt today comes in the middle of a hot streak that has been built on soft contact, not swing-and-miss stuff. Pfaadt is 4-1 with a 4.58 ERA this season, but since returning from a Triple-A demotion on June 30 he's been outstanding, 4-0 with a 2.14 ERA across four starts. His last outing, fittingly, came against this very same Cardinals lineup less than a week ago, 5.1 innings, two runs, six hits, and just three strikeouts on 87 pitches, generating only three whiffs in that outing.

Today he faces St. Louis again, and the Cardinals strike out against right-handers at a modest 21.8% clip. A pitcher who is winning games by locating and limiting hard contact rather than missing bats, doing it again against a lineup he just saw days ago, is a strong fit for the under. Take it.

Pitcher Strikeout Projections vs Betting Lines

Every strikeout prop on the board gets measured against season-long performance, recent form, and opponent tendencies before it ever makes this column. Betting lines move for a reason, and our job is to find where the market has not fully priced in a matchup edge. That is the foundation of every pick you see above.

Strikeout Props to Avoid Today

Michael McGreevy vs Diamondbacks

McGreevy has been one of the better stories in the Cardinals rotation, a 4-7 record that undersells a 2.92 ERA, and he's been especially sharp lately, a 1.46 ERA over his last four starts while completing at least six innings in each. At home specifically, he's been an ace, with a 1.89 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across nine starts at Busch Stadium. That kind of run of form can tempt bettors into chasing the over here.

The problem is the strikeouts were never part of that hot streak. McGreevy managed just 28 strikeouts over those same 47.2 innings during his four-start run, a modest 5.9 K/9 and 16.6% strikeout rate on the season, one of the lowest marks on the entire board. He's a command-and-contact pitcher succeeding by limiting walks and hard contact, not missing bats, and this will be his second look at this same Diamondbacks lineup in less than a week after a similarly modest strikeout total his last time out. The results are great. The strikeout total is not where the value is. Leave it alone.
