2023 Player Outlook
Seven-time All-Star reliever Aroldis Chapman, once arguably the most dominating closer in the game with a triple-digit fastball, will work out of the Royals pen in 2023. In 13 seasons with the Reds, Cubs, and Yankees, Chapman has 315 career saves, a 2.48 ERA, and 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings. As a Yankee, he struggled last year with an ERA of 4.46 and a 17.5% walk rate and was left off the postseason roster after skipping a team workout. With a new start in Kansas City, Chapman will not necessarily be the Royals' closer with Scott Barlow entrenched in that role for the past 1.5 seasons, but he could rebound and finish his career strong over the next few years.
