I’d like to take a minute and say how happy I was to see Wyndham Clark take home his first PGA Tour victory at the Wells Fargo. I’m so mad at myself for ignoring him in my playbook before last week’s event because he had been playing such good golf and his game fit Quail Hollow so well.  This guy was a college star at Oregon winning the Pac-12 Championship and GolfWeek Player of the Year in 2016.  One of those players who took awhile to figure it out on the PGA Tour and now he’s a name to keep in your mind every week when setting those lineups.

Overall, it was not the best week for the playbook in Charlotte over the weekend.  A few bright spots but Rory McIlory finishing T47 was a crusher to a lot of lineups.  The only thing to do is move on and look to Texas this weekend for the Byron Nelson.

This tournament has been a regular tour stop for a long time but did not become the “Byron Nelson” until 1968.  It’s one of only two events named after former PGA Tour legends, the other being obviously the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  The event has been hosted by multiple courses but in 2021 it moved to TPC Craig Ranch and K.H. Lee has won both editions.  The course sits on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas and while it is relatively new to the PGA Tour, it is no stranger to the Korn Ferry Tour.  It hosted the Korn Ferry Tour Championships in 2008 and 2012.

We don’t usually see a great field in the week before a major and it’s no different this week.  We will see the return of Texas boy, Scottie Scheffler this weekend. He skipped the Wells Fargo last week to play in his home state this week. Hideki Matsuyama will tee it up at TPC Craig Ranch this weekend after finishing third last year.  Back-to-back champion K.H. Lee looks for the three-peat after making a little run to a Top 10 last weekend in Charlotte.  The Australian Min Woo Lee returns to the PGA Tour continuing his goal of earning a Special Temporary Membership.  You will also see other notables like Tyrrell Hatton, Jason Day, Si Woo Kim, Adam Scott, and Matt Kuchar.  Jordan Spieth has withdrawn from the event with a wrist injury.

TPC Craig Ranch was not a challenge for these players in years past as K.H. Lee won this event at 25 and 26 under par in his two wins.  If Lee does win the event once again this year, he’ll be only the third player in PGA Tour history to win the same tournament three years in a row.  The course is 7,414 yards with rather large tree lined fairways and will play as a Par 71 this year to try and raise the scores a bit. The course has zoysia fairways and large accommodating bentgrass greens.  Texas courses are not known to feature a lot of water but this place is the exception.  Rowlett Creek rolls throughout the course and is featured on 13 of the 18 holes.  The primary defense on this course like most places in the Lonestar state is the wind.  There are curtain players who just know how to play in these winds like the locals Scottie Scheffler and Ryan Palmer.  I know it seems silly but there is an edge there and you should take advantage of it.

It looks like the weather is going to be awful this weekend.  There are thunderstorms in the forecast from Wednesday morning through Sunday evening.  We will see winds start high on Thursday touching nearly 20 mph but it is projected to drop each day as we roll through the weekend.  The temperatures will sit in the low 80s throughout the event.

Keep an eye on the discord chat as we get closer to lineups lock to discuss how to handle this weather situation.

ONE AND DONE PICK: Matt Kuchar
