PGA DFS Playbook for the 3M Open: Top DraftKings & FanDuel PGA DFS Picks

It was an interesting week at the Open Championship. While I was happy to see a guy like Brian Harman take down his first major, it was a bit clouded by the heckling he got from the fans in England. He handled it with grace and humility but I’d like to see better sportsmanship from the fans overseas. It should make for an even more entertaining Ryder Cup in Italy.
Rory played solid but not well enough to complete the narrative that most everyone wanted to see. He finished Top 10 in the last three majors after missing the cut at the Masters. We will see if he can successfully defend his FedEx Cup crown in a few weeks at East Lake.
I bet not a lot of people thought Jon Rahm would outduel Scottie Scheffler given their records coming into the week but that happened. Sepp Straka continued his terrific play backing up his victory at the John Deere with a runner up finish at the Open Championship. After a rough stretch, it was good to see Jason Day bounce back at 2nd place finish at Hoylake. It’s been a sophomore slump for the 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Cameron Young but he cracked the Top 10 for the second straight year at the British Open.
The PGA Tour heads back to the United States and more specifically, Blaine Minnesota for the 3M Open. The tournament purse is $6.6 million, with the winner receiving $1.188 million. We’ve seen a variety of players, including Cameron Champ, Tony Finau, and Scottie Scheffler win this event.
TPC Twin Cities was established over 100 years after last week’s course Royal Liverpool. This 22-year-old course was designed by Arnold Palmer and Tom Lehman. It will play as a Par 71 and stretch out 7,431 yards and feature bentgrass greens. We are looking for solid drivers of the golf ball, especially distance which is one of the reasons we saw Cameron Champ take home the title in 2021. These players will need to go low and do it consistently throughout the weekend to have a chance at bringing home the hardware.
The next few weeks on the PGA Tour is all about qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs which starts two weeks from Thursday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The Top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings get to play in that event, then the Top 50 after that event play in the BMW Championship and finally the Top 30 get to tee it up at the Tour Championship for $15 million dollars. There are some big name golfers who are on the outside looking in at the Top 70 with just two tournaments remaining like major winners; Shane Lowry, Justin Thomas, Adam Scott, Danny Willett, and Gary Woodland. These are the types of players you should take a second look at this weekend when it comes to DFS.
It will be quite a change of pace for the players who participated in last week’s Open Championship. They will see extreme heat and humidity with temperatures in the low 90s on Thursday and Friday. It will cool down slightly over the weekend into the high 80s but those moisture wicking shirts will come in handy in the Twin Cities this week.
