It doesn’t always take long to the NFL to start getting weird. Sometimes it’s as soon as Week 2. This week in the San Francisco 49ers vs. New Orleans Saints matchup, we’ll see quarterbacks Mac Jones and Spencer Rattler square off. That’s sure to be interesting.

The 49ers are hoping to keep the momentum going following a Week 1 win. While the Saints are hoping that a decent showing from Spencer Rattler last week can translate to their first win this Sunday. Either way, it’s our job to dig into the information and narratives at hand to figure out if there is any action to take advantage of this week!

49ers vs. Saints Predictions For NFL Week 1, Sunday 1:00 PM ET

Despite both being NFC teams, these organizations don’t play all that often with only two matchups over the last five years. The 49ers won in 2022 while the Saints won in 2020. That doesn’t have much bearing on this game, especially with the quarterback situations.

As mentioned, the 49ers won a low scoring affair last week against their rival Seattle Seahawks. They walked away with the 17-13 victory. The Saints did battle with the Arizona Cardinals and a revamped defense, falling 20-13. I’m sure both teams would like to put more points on the board this week.

San Francisco 49ers: Mac Jones At The Helm

The big storyline is, naturally, the Brock Purdy injury. He could reportedly miss up to five weeks with a painful turf toe injury. But that’s not the only injury the 49ers are dealing with. They were already waiting for Brandon Aiyuk to return and dealing with an ailing Jauan Jennings when they lost an even bigger piece in Week 1. George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury that landed him on IR.

Luckily, the San Francisco 49ers defense is largely intact and fairly stout. That’s what kept them in the game against the Seattle Seahawks, holding them to 13 points. And a lot is riding on the likes of Nick Bosa and Fred Warner going into the game this week vs. New Orleans.

New Orleans Saints: A Kellen Moore Mentality

The Dallas Cowboys and Kellen Moore once famously “parted ways” because Moore was a bit too aggressive on offense. Mike McCarthy said that Kellen wants to “light up the scoreboard” while he wanted to run the ball and let the defense rest. With the Eagles and Saquon Barkley last year, Moore showed his willingness to run the ball. But he was right back to his old ways this week in New Orleans, with Spencer Rattler dropping back to pass 53 times which tied the league lead with Josh Allen and Drake Maye.

The Saints defense actually did an okay job last week against a Cardinals team that has a lot of weapons. Demario Davis, as always, was flying around making plays. And Cameron Jordan showed he still has some juice left in the tank. But the Saints will be without Chase Young again and they’ll also be without one of their top graded players from Week 1, safety Julian Blackmon

49ers vs. Saints: San Francisco 49ers -3 (-110 at BetMGM Sportsbook )

Our thought process when it comes to backup or young QBs is often to treat them equally. We look at it as both teams are starting replacement level quarterbacks. In fact, the Saints have their starting quarterback while the 49ers are starting their backup. But that reality is that these guys are not created equal. The situation absolutely favors the 49ers.

Mac Jones has started 49 NFL games in his career. And he has a 20-29 record. He won NFL games just last season and supported a great stretch for Brian Thomas If you believe the rumors floating around, Kyle Shanahan wanted Mac Jones in San Francisco from the start but may have been pressured into taking Trey Lance. Either way, Mac Jones is a professional NFL player with plenty of experience. And Shanahan’s system is incredibly friendly for quarterbacks.

On the flip side, you have Spencer Rattler. This is a guy that has only started seven NFL games - and he’s lost all seven of them. The leash he has on this job over rookie Tyler Shough is likely quite short. The 49ers certainly have injury issues but the Saints do as well - they are not only missing Chase Young and Julian Blackmon as mentioned, but will be without offensive lineman Trevor Penning once again. I think the superior overall team with the more experienced QB in San Francisco take care of business here.
