NFL Training Camp Updates, Live News, Injuries: James Cook Contract Update

James Cook “Hold-in” Update

Prior to yesterday's NFL training camp, James Cook was seen without pads on, claiming he was sitting out of practice because of “business.” Well, that “business” has continued into today, as the Bills' running back has now gone back-to-back days without practicing. Cook is in search of a contract extension before the start of his fourth year in the league, after putting up two straight 1000-yard rushing seasons. He is currently in the final year of his rookie deal, which will pay him just over five million dollars in base salary, but he is reportedly looking for a deal closer to $15 million per year.

General Manager Brandon Beane stated that he did not see the drama around a contract extension coming, but he does understand that this is part of the business. He also noted that he is disappointed in the situation, though, and that he has been in constant contact with Cook's agent. This is the first time in Beane's tenure that he has had a player hold out or hold-in in Cook's case from practices due to a contract dispute, but that has not discouraged the general manager, as he is still willing to get a deal done as long as the number makes sense for both sides.

Indianapolis Colts Depth Chart Released - QB Battle Update

Today, the Indianapolis Colts released their first official depth chart, and of course, our NFL Training Camp Updates have been locked in on the quarterback battles across the leagues, so I was chomping at the bit to see who was listed at QB1…

“QB1: Daniel Jones OR Anthony Richardson” Not unexpected, especially still this early in the preseason, but disappointing to say the least.

In response to the quarterback battle, third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson noted that he is competing with himself beyond anything and that he would be carrying himself the same way even if they brought Tom Brady in; he would still work to beat him out for the QB1 job.

It is also worth noting that the current QB3, rookie Riley Leonard out of Notre Dame, has looked great in practices thus far.

Drake Maye, TreVeyon Henderson Shine

Drake Maye reportedly had a great day of practice today outside of the red zone as the offense starts to click under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Maye finished 11/19 passing during his 11-on-11, letting several of his weapons shine, such as JaLynn Polk and rookie Kyle Williams, but the real star of the show was rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson, who has been impressing in the receiving game.

Feels like shades of Tom Brady to James White, especially with Josh McDaniels running the offense… right?

Kaleb McGary Contract Extension

Recently, we have seen a lot of big men getting paid in our NFL Training Camp Updates, from defensive linemen like Zach Sieler and Zach Allen, to offensive linemen like Zach Tom and Kolton Miller (way to ruin the Zach trend, Kolton). Today, Kaleb McGary joins these stars with a new contract of his own. The Atlanta Falcons penciled McGary in for a two-year, 30 million extension. The veteran tackle has been with the Falcons since his rookie season in 2019 and will continue as their right tackle, protecting the lefty Michael Penix's blindside for another few years.

Fantasy Football Update - Tyjae Spears, Jordan Mason

As if the Jacksonville Jaguars' backfield was not already a mess for fantasy football fans, it seems to have just gotten messier. The Jaguars are reportedly planning to keep 4 running backs on the roster and use a committee approach. So much for Tank Bigsby being the steal of your fantasy drafts.

Checking into a different AFC South backfield, the Tennessee Titans may be relying more on running back Tyjae Spears this season, as he has reportedly been the offensive star thus far in Titans training camp. Tennessee will look to get Spears more touches this season, as Tony Pollard led the backfield last year.

Looking beyond running back rooms, the Las Vegas Raiders have changed up their whole offensive appearance from coaching to quarterback, which also means there is an opportunity for new top receivers to emerge alongside superstar tight end Brock Bowers and the veteran wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. Today, it was rookie Jack Bech who was shining, making several highlight catches throughout practice.

NFL Training Camp Injury Update & Transactions: Browns QBs Injury Update

On top of all of our NFL Training Camp Updates on the field, plenty of news happened off the field as well. Check out our NFL Training Camp Injury Update & Transactions.

Browns QBs Injury Update - Shedeur Sanders, Kenny Pickett

With four quarterbacks getting meaningful snaps in a quarterback competition, surely someone has to be healthy, right? Well, yes, but I am sure you didn't think it was going to be the 40-year-old veteran, Joe Flacco, right? Over the weekend, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders was dealing with arm soreness, but returned to practice today. As he returns, fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel steps out, as he was limited today with hamstring tightness. Meanwhile, Kenny Pickett is still working to return from his own hamstring injury, as he remains out of team drills.

Greg Joseph Released

An overlooked position battle going into NFL training camps was a battle to be the kicker for the San Francisco 49ers. After an up-and-down 2024 season from kicker Jake Moody, the Niners decided to bring in veteran Greg Joseph to compete during camp. Today, Joseph was released, meaning Moody will be the 49ers' kicker once again to start the 2025 season.

AFC East Injury Update

In the past couple of years, the AFC East has seemingly been the Buffalo Bills and everyone else. While the other teams attempt to close the gap, it is difficult when the teams are facing significant injuries, especially so early on in the offseason.

We have covered the Dolphins' injury issues significantly, as they have already lost two corners, Kader Kohu and Artie Burns, to season-ending injuries. Today, their injury report has cleaned up a bit, but things are still not looking great for Miami's secondary.

The Jets were expecting to be without a few players this week, including Quinnen Williams and John Simpson, due to injuries they picked up last week. Since then, wide receiver Xavier Gipson and cornerback Kris Boyd have joined them on the injury report with shoulder injuries. Safety Malachi Moore is also working his way back from an oblique injury.

Finally, the New England Patriots are currently without their two top cornerbacks, Carlton Davis and Christian Gonzalez, due to injuries. Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is also out with a foot injury.

Jordan Addison Suspension Update

Despite some conflicting reports in terms of suspension length, the Minnesota Vikings are currently bracing for Jordan Addison to face a three-game suspension due to a DUI charge he received last July.

Other Notable Injury Updates

  • Terry McLaurin: Terry McLaurin still has no timetable to return from the PUP list for his “ankle injury.”
  • Lamar Jackson: Superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson did not practice today due to an excused absence for a pre-planned personal matter.
  • Najee Harris: Najee Harris is reportedly getting better, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh, and has started walking laps around the practice field as part of his rehab for his eye injury. There is still no timetable for his return.
  • Isaac Guerendo: Isaac Guerendo is expected to miss a few weeks with a shoulder injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk is also day-to-day with an Achilles injury.
