Without further ado, let's get to some more fantasy football advice with today's NFL Training Camp report.

Cowboys OT Tyron Smith Out Indefinitely With Torn Hamstring

If you've drafted Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, CeeDee Lamb, or any other Dallas Cowboys offensive player, this is big. Tyron Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowler and arguably the best left tackle in the NFL, suffered a bad leg injury during Wednesday's practice and will be sidelined for most of the 2022 season. ESPN's Adam Schefter and Todd Archer reported last night that it was a torn left hamstring for Smith that would sideline him indefinitely and cost him multiple months. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport then reported Wednesday morning that Smith's injury is more specifically an avulsion fracture of the left knee with the hamstring torn off the bone, which will keep him out until at least December. It appears the December is the earliest we'll see Smith back for the Cowboys, if at all this season. Though this injury doesn't directly involve someone you'd roster in fantasy football, it will surely have an impact on the Dallas offense.

Dolphins WR Jaylen Waddle Dealing With Injury

Miami Dolphins WR Jaylen Waddle is dealing with an undisclosed injury and has missed most of the last two weeks of practice, per NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe. It appears to be a right leg injury of some sort but nothing too serious for the Dolphins wideout. Still, this isn’t something you want to hear with two weeks until Week 1 and Waddle reportedly missing out on practice time to get acclimated to Mike McDaniel’s new offense in Miami.

Darren Waller’s Status Up in the Air for Week 1

Last week we got our hopes up about Darren Waller being ready for the start of the regular season when he returned to practice. Now it looks like the Las Vegas Raiders tight end could be in danger of missing Week 1 due to his hamstring injury. According to The Athletic’s Tashaun Reed, head coach Josh McDaniels isn’t comfortable predicting Waller’s status for the regular-season opener. For what it’s worth, McDaniels also said he’s not concerned about the tight end either. There were rumors that Waller’s absence during training camp might be contract related, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported it was because of the hamstring. For us fantasy football folks, we have to be prepared to find a replacement TE in our lineups if Waller does end up missing Week 1.

Giants WR Collin Johnson Out For Season

Three different New York Giants wide receivers populated the NFL wire yesterday, so let’s first get to the worst of the news. Let’s start with the worst of the news items. Collin Johnson suffered a torn Achilles, according to the team, and will now miss the rest of the season. Johnson was fighting for a starting WR role in the Giants offense and could’ve been third or fourth on the team in terms of targets and/or receptions this year. His injury now opens up more playing time for David Sills V, Darius Slayton, and Wan’Dale Robinson.

Injury Updates for Giants WRs Kadarius Toney & Sterling Shepard

How about some other bad news for the New York Giants? WR Kadarius Toney is reportedly dealing with a hamstring injury and didn’t participate in team drills at Wednesday’s practice, per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan. This is definitely not a good sign for a guy that dealt with injuries last year and has been battling a knee injury this summer. Any knee, hamstring, or other lower-body injury isn’t what we want to hear for a wide receiver like Toney who relies on his speed and playmaking.

On a happier note for the New York receiving corps, Sterling Shepard has been activated off of the PUP list. The wideout is recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in December and practiced on Wednesday for the first time since the injury. Shepard is still a question mark to play in Week 1, but this is encouraging news that he’ll be available for most of the regular season. With Johnson’s season-ending injury and Toney possibly missing time this year, Shepard could end up being the Giants’ second-most productive wide receiver behind Kenny Golladay

Chargers WR Joshua Palmer Clears Concussion Protocol

This is very welcome news to those that have Josh Palmer as a fantasy football breakout candidate this year. The Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver returned to practice on Wednesday and cleared concussion protocol following last week's preseason game. Palmer has turned heads all summer at Chargers training camp and is expected to regularly operate as the team’s third WR next to Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Since he’s back practicing, now we can get back aboard the Palmer hype train with quotes like the one below.

Could the 49ers Cut Trey Sermon?

A season ago, fantasy football managers were drafting Trey Sermon in hopes that he would emerge as the San Francisco 49ers’ lead running back. Well, we all know that didn’t happen as he took a backseat to Elijah Mitchell, Jeff Wilson Jr., Raheem Mostert, and even Deebo Samuel in the San Fran backfield in 2021. Now it appears the 49ers could actually move on from Sermon despite drafting him in the third round last year. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area suggests that Sermon could get cut before Week 1 as he battles with JaMycal Hasty and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason for a final roster spot. Maiocco says that this wouldn’t even be a conversation if Sermon wasn’t a third-round pick a year ago. The San Francisco RB depth chart, according to Maiocco, currently consists of Mitchell, Wilson Jr., rookie Tyrion Davis-Price, and Hasty all above Sermon with Mason as a possible option as well. We’ll see if the 49ers end up cutting Sermon if they can’t trade him away, but the SF run game remains a fantasy headache either way.
