Latest NFL News & Rumors This Week

With the playoff picture starting to take shape, there is plenty to cover. In today's Latest NFL News & Rumors This Week, we discuss Philip Rivers coming out of retirement, some quarterback drama, and much more!

NFL QB Update: Philip Rivers Returns

Dadgummit, he's back! After losing both Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson to IR and Riley Leonard currently considered “week-to-week” with a PCL sprain, the once dominant Indianapolis Colts are now very thin at the quarterback position. So, Shane Steichen decided the most obvious answer was to pull a 44-year-old Hall-of-Fame semi-finalist out of retirement to play for the first time since the 2020 season. He'll be surrounded by some familiar faces, as Steichen coached Rivers back with the Chargers, and there is some roster carryover from Rivers' last snaps with the Colts five years ago.

While it has not been announced if Rivers will be starting, as he was practicing alongside fellow quarterbacks Riley Leonard and Brett Rypien today, Rivers is familiar with Steichen's offense and went first in all of the drills today. Either way, the Colts have a tough task ahead, now outside of the playoffs looking in, and facing the 10-2 Seattle Seahawks this weekend.

NFL Rumors: Sirianni Will Not Bench Hurts

If there is one thing that can be said about Philadelphia sports fans, it is that they are rowdy. So, of course, after an ugly five-turnover game from former Super Bowl MVP Quarterback Jalen Hurts, the fans have been tweeting, calling radio stations, and posting TikToks all asking for Nick Sirianni to fire his offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo, and bench Jalen Hurts. At the time of this article being written, Patullo is still employed (despite Eagles legend LeSean McCoy demanding he be fired), and Nick Sirianni has acknowledged that a quarterback change would be “ridiculous.”

Despite their three-game losing streak, the Eagles have a much kinder road ahead, facing off against the 2-11 Las Vegas Raiders this week, two matchups against the banged-up Washington Commanders, and one tough outing against the Buffalo Bills. With a two-game lead in their division, barring any crazy upsets, the Eagles should still walk away with another NFC East title.

NFL Transaction Update: Jermaine Burton Released

Jermaine Burton was once viewed as a very promising college prospect as a wide receiver out of Alabama. When he was selected by the Bengals in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, people thought that the receiving group of him, Ja'Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins catching balls from Joe Burrow would be unstoppable. Unfortunately, he was never able to crack the starting lineup, let alone see the field much at all. Now, Burton has officially been released by the Bengals.

It was never much of a talent problem, but Burton seemed to struggle with discipline and off-field issues. Prior to his release, Burton was suspended by the team, likely due to his lack of accountability. Burton will now look to another organization for the next step in his career.

In other transaction news, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul are reuniting after Pierre-Paul spent four years with the team from 2018-2021. The Bucs are looking to make a playoff push, currently tied at 7-6 atop the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers.
