Paul Skenes MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 7.5 Strikeouts 

Simply put, it’s been a down year for Paul Skenes. The reigning NL Cy Young winner has a 3.97 ERA this season, which includes a 5.77 ERA over his past seven starts. While he’s not nearly as dominant or consistent as we’re used to, Skenes still has plenty of strikeout upside in the right spots. 

That’s what we have in today’s home matchup. The Los Angeles Angels have been strikeout-prone all year, and it’s even worse lately. They have the second-highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching in the league this season, at a 25.2% clip. Over the past month, the Angels have a league-high 27.2% K rate vs. righties. 

Skenes, meanwhile, has shown notably more strikeout ability at home. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ ace boasts a 31.8% strikeout rate and 11.8 K/9 at home, compared to a 25.4% strikeout rate and 9.5 K/9 on the road. He also brings in a 2.72 FIP at home and a 3.50 FIP on the road. 

It’s worth noting that the last time Skenes struck out eight or more batters was seven starts ago. He definitely hasn’t had his strikeout stuff as much lately. Still, the matchup is ideal, and he gets to pitch at home. Let’s bank on his ceiling re-emerging. 

 

Gabriel Moreno MLB Underdog Fantasy Pick: Higher Than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI

Gabriel Moreno has been a consistent producer for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season. His .300 batting average ranks eighth among qualified MLB hitters, while his .849 OPS sits 16th in the majors. We’re backing the D-backs’ catcher to stay productive in Sunday’s matchup. 

The Houston Astros will start Peter Lambert today. The right-hander owns a respectable 3.66 ERA on the season, but he’s been less effective recently, posting a 5.76 ERA over his last six starts. Moreno, on the other hand, is hitting .307 with an .869 OPS against righty pitchers. He also enters this matchup in good form, recording a hit in 21 of his last 26 games.
