As we continue to progress the positions, we find ourselves here at tight end. Rob Gronkowski is the top option, but his status is still up in the air for Sunday’s tilt with the Miami Dolphins. Tight end isn’t a position you want to punt. There is plenty of value to be had at this position, so make sure you get yourself a reliable player when setting your lineups. Wide receivers, running backs and quarterbacks are going to eat up most of your salary, but don’t be afraid to pay that extra bit for a good, reliable, consistent tight end.
Here are this week’s Top 5 tight ends for Week 2 of the NFL season.
Rob Gronkowski vs. MIA
Gronkowski may not play in this matchup, but if he does see the field, he’s the unquestioned top tight end in Week 2. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will lean on the tight end and since he’s facing the Miami defense, he’s a virtual lock for a touchdown.
Greg Olsen vs. SF
The return of Kelvin Benjamin did little to affect Olsen’s looks from quarterback Cam Newton. He received nine targets, just three behind Kelvin Benjamin and five more than the next closest guy. Olsen is going to be a top tight end just about every week, thanks to his role in the Carolina offense.
Jordan Reed vs. DAL
Other than Rob Gronkowski, no tight end is the focal point of the team’s offense like Reed is in the Washington regime. Kirk Cousins will continue to go to his reliable tight end early and often. Although Reed struggled against Dallas last season, that shouldn’t be the case in 2016.
Delanie Walker @ DET
Walker didn’t get quite the attention in Week 1 that many expected, but he should see more than five targets this week against the Lions. DeMarco Murray isn’t going to get seven targets every week, so the available targets will likely be spread between Tajae Sharpe and Walker. Detroit got torched by the Indianapolis tight ends for three touchdowns in Week 1, which gives Walker plenty of optimism.
Antonio Gates vs. JAC
Gates saw just four targets in Week 1, but the injury to Keenan Allen opens the door for more targets for the veteran tight end. Jacksonville has allowed the fourth-highest yards per completion to tight ends since the start of last season. It was a quiet season opener, but he should fare much better here.
