The start of the 2022 NFL season is going to steal the show today, but before you get too deep into tonight’s football action, make sure to set those MLB DFS lineups and give your fantasy baseball team the proper attention it deserves. Remember, you are still in the hunt for the fantasy baseball championship, don’t lose sight of that! We’ll recap the biggest events of Wednesday’s action, including Mike Trout’s home run streak, Eric Haase’s monster five-hit performance, and Gerrit Cole delivering an ace-like start that the Bronx Bombers desperately needed. Oh, Aaron Judge homered again, but honestly, what’s new at this point? We’ll also talk about the latest prospect that is getting the call, likely tomorrow, as well as an American League reliever that should be a popular fantasy baseball waiver wire pickup. I’ll also give you my best bet for today’s Major League Baseball action.

Fantasy Baseball MLB News & Notes from Monday

Mike Trout on Home Run Binge

Other than Aaron Judge, there might not be another hitter than Mike Trout that pitchers do not want to face at the moment. Over his last four games, he’s homered in each game, while slashing .438/.471/1.250 with a .706 wOBA, 382 wRC+, and .813 ISO. The star outfielder has five home runs in his last 10 games, and despite just six RBI, he’s hitting .350 with a .775 SLG. The lack of an offense outside of Trout and Shohei Ohtani has hurt his counting stats, but Trout is up to a .278/.367/.615 triple slash with 32 home runs, 68 runs scored, and 62 RBI.

Josh Jung Getting the Call

Rumor has it that Texas will promote Josh Jung to the big league club on Friday. If it weren’t for an ill-timed, unfortunate injury prior to the season, Jung could have emerged as the team’s starting third baseman, but his MLB debut was delayed. Since returning to full health, he has raked at Triple-A, hitting six home runs with a .526 SLG and 24 RBI in 22 games. Jung could have some strikeouts in his future at the big league level, but if he can harness that, he’s a perennial .265 with 20+ home run bat. He could be the impact bat your fantasy baseball team needs down the stretch.

Gerrit Cole Fans 14 in Dominant Win

Wow. Given the state of affairs in the Bronx at the moment, the Yankees desperately needed an ace-like performance from Cole. Really, they need it every time he toes the rubber, and he delivered yesterday. He allowed just one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out 14 Twins in 6.2 innings of work. He generated a 53 percent whiff rate on his slider, a 34 percent whiff rate on his four-seamer, and overall, he generated 23 whiffs on 56 swings (41%). Cole now has a 2.03 ERA over his last six starts, despite a 2-3 record.

Eric Haase Has Monster Day

Five hits. One home run. Two doubles. If you’re like me and recently had to place Willson Contreras on the IL during the most important part of your fantasy baseball season, Haase seems to be a viable replacement if he’s still available. Yes, he had five hits yesterday, but over his last nine games, he’s slashing .400/.424/.700 with two home runs, three doubles, six runs scored, and four RBI. Even prior to yesterday’s hit parade, he was still hitting a serviceable .280 with a .440 SLG.

Need Saves? Get Jimmy Herget

He has the team’s last three saves, and he has a 0.00 ERA and 11.74 K/9 over his last 7.2 innings of work, which also includes three saves and one hold. The Angels might not give him a ton of save opportunities the rest of the way, but the sidewinder isn’t someone that fantasy baseball managers should be sleeping on. He primarily uses three pitches, and his sinker generates a ton of ground balls, while his slider and curveball are used to put batters away. He’ll need to harness his command a bit, but the trend lines below for his O-Swing% and SwStr% are encouraging for the stretch run.

Thursday’s Best Bet

White Sox -0.5 Run Line First Five Innings (-115)

So, all you’re telling me is that the White Sox need to be winning after the fifth inning? Yes, please, sign me up! Oakland is slightly below league average against right-handed pitching over the last two weeks with the eighth-highest strikeout rate. On the flip side, despite a lower batting average, the White Sox have the seventh-highest OPS against southpaws, and JP Sears could be in for a rough night. Oh, did I forget to mention that AL Cy Young contender Dylan Cease, and his 1.78 road ERA, is starting tonight for Chicago? He’s good, and Chicago has enough thump against southpaws to be leading by the end of the fifth, especially with Cease shutting down Oakland’s lineup.
