Best MLB Stolen Base Picks Today:
Locking in the best stolen base predictions means finding the absolute perfect storm of a high-on-base runner and a weak battery. Without further ado, here are our top MLB stolen base picks today for Sunday, August 23:
Favorite Bets:
Esteury Ruiz, Miami Marlins (+162)
He’s far and away the favorite on the board, and rightfully so. Not only is he 15-for-17 on stolen base attempts versus southpaws this season, but he has a .381 OBP and .396 wOBA against left-handed pitching. We haven’t seen much of Jackson Kent this year, but in the small sample size, opponents have a 4.9% stolen base attempt rate against him, which is nearly four times the league average. Yes, small sample size, but notable nonetheless. On top of that, you have Ruiz’s 99th percentile sprint speed going up against Keibert Ruiz’s 3rd percentile pop time and well below average arm strength. If you want a less chalky pick for the day from this Marlins squad, Xavier Edwards (+439) would be another solid choice.
Tim Tawa, Arizona Diamondbacks (+579)
We hit on Spencer Jones yesterday at similar odds, so let’s look to do it again by attacking a good matchup. Tawa has a .387 OBP over the last week, and he’s a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts in the month of August. He’s more of an opportunistic runner than a pure burner on the base paths, but the Andrew Abbott-Jose Trevino battery is one you can most certainly run on. Tawa actually stole a base a few days ago when Trevino was behind the dish, and the Cincinnati backstop hasn’t caught a runner stealing since July 11 (11 SB attempts since). Furthermore, Trevino has a 12th percentile pop time, the sixth-worst arm strength amongst catchers with at least 10 stolen base attempts against (in terms of mph on throws to second), and a 14% caught stealing rate. It should be Trevino behind the dish with Arizona having a southpaw on the mound, but even if it’s Tyler Stephenson, he only has a 17% caught stealing rate when Abbott is on the bump (20% overall).
