Even in Week 12 there are new names popping up that have immediate fantasy value. The waiver wire just keeps on giving this year; which is a good thing, considering the injuries seem to be never ending. Jordy Nelson still leads the league in red zone targets with 24, but teammate Davante Adams is hot on his trail with 18 (good for fourth overall in the NFL). As I mentioned last week, Brandon Marshall and Emmanuel Sanders were bound to start improving their red zone conversion rates and both saw the end zone this past weekend. Patience is a virtue, and players with high end talent will eventually start to take advantage of their roles. Hopefully, they’ll both finish strong and make up for lost time and opportunities.

Here’s the Red Zone recap:

TARGET MONSTERS:

Three players had four targets in the red zone this week and all three play different positions. Jordan Reed put forth quite an effort despite some legitimate injuries on Thanksgiving, and caught three of his four targets and two touchdowns. Reed was impressive despite missing some time during this game. His sprained AC joint makes his status tenuous at best for Week 13. Vernon Davis will be a logical and viable add in his stead. However, I would also strongly consider Ladarius Green of the Steelers as well against the Giants.

David Johnson was also 3-for-4 in the red zone but had just one touchdown. Johnson continues to be one of the best DFS return on investments all year despite his weighty salary. The Redskins won’t have an answer for him this week either (25th ranked rush defense). The new name to this list was Bears tight end Deonte Thompson. Thompson had nine targets overall and four in the red zone with a touchdown. It’s normal to think that a green quarterback like Matt Barkley would lean on a tight end, but at this point it’s just too risky to expect any sort of repeat performance.

MOST EFFICIENCT:

What a night Tyreek Hill had!? He was a perfect 3-for-3 in the red zone with a touchdown. He also ran for a score and returned a kick for one as well. Hill is a dynamic force who the Chiefs have lacked since Jamaal Charles was last healthy in early 2015. As a sneaky Draft Kings flex play, Anquan Boldin has had some moments this year, especially in the red zone. Boldin was 3-for-3 on Thursday with a touchdown in the red zone and continues to prove trouble for defenses in the short field.

The other big story of the week was the Patriots’ Malcolm Mitchell who was 2-for-2 with two touchdowns against the Jets and posted back to back 17-plus point fantasy games. It’s looking like Mitchell is carving out a role for himself in this offense down the stretch and if Tom Brady has confidence in him clearly the upside is enormous. I would expect him to be productive yet again versus the Rams this week. Delanie Walker has been a rock of dependability at a tight end position that’s been incredibly volatile all year long. Walker was 2-for-2 with a touchdown Sunday and continues to be Mr. Reliable in the red zone.

ONES TO WATCH:

Besides Mitchell and Hill, Marquess Wilson of the Bears’ deserves some attention. Wilson caught 8-of-11 targets last week including 1-of-2 in the red zone and a touchdown. He seems like the early favorite in the offense and there should be plenty of chances for him to be productive versus the 49ers. Tyler Eifert was 1-for-2 in the red zone with a score and is almost a lock for a touchdown against the Eagles Sunday. Andy Dalton doesn’t have A.J. Green to rely on and he clearly trusts Eifert more than any other receiver inside the 20. His teammates Brandon LaFell and Tyler Boyd were both 0-for-2 in the red zone last week. Hunter Henry is getting back in the swing of things (1-for-1 with a touchdown in the red zone). With Tyrell Williams banged up, Henry could be in for increased volume across the board. Look for Brandon Marshall (1-for-1 with a touchdown last week) to be productive versus the Colts on Monday night, as well as Eric Ebron to bounce back from an uncharacteristic goose egg.
