Smith will enter the season as the Giants' backup quarterback after Josh Johnson was released Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Smith and Johnson vied for the job throughout the offseason and preseason, with the latter even earning a start at one point. However, Smith must have proved the health of his right knee enough to earn the trust of the coaching staff. Although Eli Manning has started 199 consecutive regular-season game, Smith will now be called upon in garbage time or in the event of an injury. Rounding out the QB depth chart is 2017 second-round pick Davis Webb. Sep 02 1:42 pm (EST)
