We never thought we’d see the day. But after 12 seasons, Mike Evans is on the move from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In fact, he’s flying to the complete opposite end of the country to join the San Francisco 49ers. A big change for all parties involved here - with a lot of implications for fantasy football. So let’s dive into all of it!

Mike Evans Contract

The San Franscico 49ers gave Mike Evans a big payday here with three years, $60.5M. As of this moment, only the Alec Pierce deal carries a higher average salary per year than the just over $20M he received. We’ll have to wait and see what the guaranteed money looks like, but a three-year deal would keep Evans in San Francisco through his age 35 season.

Mike Evans Stats

Mike Evans famously started his career with 11 straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons, an NFL record. That, unfortunately, was derailed last year - largely due to injury. He currently sits at #21 on the all-time receiving yard leader list, but another 1,000+ yard season would just put him all the way up to #12. Evans is pretty much a lock for the NFL Hall of Fame at this stage, and he looks to add to his resume in San Francisco.

San Francisco 49ers Depth Chart

The 49ers have made a LOT of changes at wide receiver lately. Deebo Samuel left last year. Brandon Aiyuk basically gave up on the team mid-season - they are still looking to move him. And Jauan Jennings is currently an unrestricted free agent, expected to find a new home.

That leaves Evans now as the top dog. If things hold pat, Ricky Pearsall would be the WR2 alongside him. The 49ers use a fullback and multiple tight ends, so they really don’t need to feature a WR3. With Evans, Pearsall, Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle, they’d be looking pretty solid.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Depth Chart

The Buccaneers moved on from Evans because they have the opposite issue of the 49ers - too many wide receivers. They will likely have Emeka Egbuka take the place of Evans on the outside, with Chris Godwin playing slot for three WR sets and flanker for two WR sets. Jalen McMillan will be on the field for three WR sets on the outside with Tez Johnson as the next man up. They are bringing Cade Otton back at tight end as well.

Mike Evans Signing Fantasy Football Impact

This is great news for the value of Mike Evans. He gets to go to a team where he can be the true WR1. Brock Purdy has a great deep ball - in fact, his 2023 season is the highest yards per attempt season on record. The scheme also highly consolidates the snaps and targets among the top two WRs because of all the fullback and tight end usage. Plus, George Kittle could miss the start of the season coming off an Achilles tear.

On the Buccaneers' side, it also frees guys up. The rotation would have been a mess if Evans had remained in the mix, with basically only Evans and Godwin having upside. Now, Emega Egbuka and Chris Godwin can both be full-time players. Jalen McMillan and Cade Otton potentially are best ball/spot start level guys as well, and could see big upside if someone gets hurt.
