MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Starting Pitchers

MLB DFS Top Pitchers

Cristopher Sanchez (PHI)

Analysis: Sanchez has made huge strides over the last few seasons and is now one of the best pitchers in baseball. He owns a sparkling 1.82 ERA across 15 starts, posting elite marks in strikeouts, walks, and groundballs. The Mets are a below-average offense against left-handed pitching with a 93 wRC+.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto (LAD)

Analysis: The strikeout numbers are down slightly this season, but the swinging-strike rate is identical to last season at 12.6%. Yamamoto has been spectacular outside of that, and he gets a high-upside matchup against an Orioles team that strikes out at the fifth-highest rate in baseball against right-handed pitching.

Paul Skenes (PIT)

Analysis: There aren't going to be many opportunities to play Skenes at a price tag under $9,000 on DK, but that's what we have today. Coors Field is obviously a difficult place to pitch, but the talent and upside still outpace the salary. Skenes struck out eight in his lone Coors Field start last season.

MLB DFS Value Pitchers

Emerson Hancock (SEA)

Analysis: Hancock has taken a leap forward this season with a change in pitch-mix that includes a new cutter and more four-seam fastballs. The results have included a massive jump in strikeouts, which raises his upside for DFS. He draws a home start against a Red Sox team that has a sub-par 86 wRC+ against righties.

J.T. Ginn (ATH)

Analysis: Ginn has posted an excellent 2.91 ERA this season, with a strong 48.1% groundball rate. Tonight, he pitches in his extremely hitter-friendly home park, but he also faces an Angels team that has struck out at the highest rate in baseball against righties. Ginn mowed them down for 10 strikeouts when he faced them in Anaheim earlier this season.

Walbert Urena (LAA)

Analysis: Urena has a similar profile to Ginn, with even more ground balls and walks. His matchup is marginally tougher, as the A's have been above-average offense against righties (106 wRC+), and they don't whiff nearly as often as the Angels. Urena should find success if he can limit the walks and keep the ball on the ground.

Top Options For Strikeouts

K-prop lines and value ratings are incorporated below for DFS and prop context. These are the arms building the highest strikeout ceilings on the 7-game slate.

Our model identifies these arms as the highest-ceiling plays for Alt-K lines today:

Cristopher Sanchez: 29.0% K% (10.6 K/9)

Paul Skenes: 30.4% K% (10.9 K/9)

Yoshinobu Yamamoto: 24.8% K% (8.4 K/9)

Freddy Peralta: 22.7% K% (8.8 K/9)

Best Odds For A Win

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto -128
  • J.T. Ginn +130
  • Emerson Hancock +152
  • Spencer Arrighetti +158

MLB DFS Lineup Picks: Stacks & Hitters

MLB DFS Top Hitters

Pittsburgh Pirates Lefties

Spencer Horwitz (1B), Brandon Lowe (2B), Ryan O'Hearn (OF), Bryan Reynolds (OF)

Analysis: The Pirates disappointed as chalk their first game in Coors, as lefty Kyle Freeland shut them down for seven innings. They get an even better spot tonight against Sugano, as the Bucs have been a better offense against right-handers. The top four lefties in the lineup (assuming Reynolds plays) are all elite options.

Corbin Carroll (OF, ARI)

Analysis: Carroll is having the best season of his already impressive young career, posting a 152 wRC+. He has crushed righties with a .257 ISO, while launching 13 homers and stealing nine bases. The matchup lines up very well for Carroll, as righties have touched up Bradley for a .205 ISO.

Jeremy Pena (SS, HOU)

Analysis: Pena is coming off a huge game last night in which he racked up three hits, including two home runs. He has been scorching hot in June, posting a 160 wRC+ in the month. The majority of his damage this season has been done against lefties, as he owns an excellent .214 ISO against them.

MLB DFS Value Hitters

Kody Clemens (1B/OF, MIN) & Trevor Larnach (OF, MIN)

Analysis: A pair of cheap lefties in strong lineup spots provides strong value options today. Larnach has posted a .369 wOBA against righties, while Clemens has an elite .259 ISO. Gallen owns a 5.35 ERA with a strikeout rate under 15%. Lefties have a .226 xISO against him this season.

Tyler Callihan (3B/OF, PIT)

Analysis: Callihan has been very good in a small sample since being called up to the big leagues. Average power and speed are both at play here, and multi-position eligibility makes him easy to get to. He also swings from the left side, which has been a big issue for Sugano.

Tommy Edman (2B/3B, LAD)

Analysis: Edman is hitless in his only two games this season, after ankle surgery cost him a few months. He has destroyed left-handed pitching in his career, with a 118 wRC+ and .221 ISO. Rogers has allowed a .186 ISO to righties this season.

MLB DFS Top Stacks

Primary Stack: Pittsburgh Pirates vs Tomoyuki Sugano (COL RHP)

Why: The Pirates have been an elite offense against righties this season, trailing only the Dodgers in wRC+. They should be able to send six or seven lefty swingers up there against Sugano. Lefties have crushed Sugano for a .291 ISO this season.

Primary Stack: Arizona Diamondbacks vs Taj Bradley (MIN RHP)

Why: Arizona has been awful against right-handed pitching this season, but there are reasons for optimism. Marte had a strong May after a slow start, and has been about average in June, while Carroll has been elite all season. They have gotten Gurriel, Smith, and Lawlar back from the IL in recent weeks. Bradley has allowed a hard-hit rate above 48% and a 10.6% barrel rate.

Primary Stack: Minnesota Twins vs Zac Gallen (ARI RHP)

Why: It has been another disastrous season for Gallen, as he owns a 5.35 ERA through 15 starts. His strikeout rate has dipped all the way below 15%. The Twins are all extremely cheap outside of Buxton, who is an elite option. They have been an above-average offense with a 104 wRC+ against right-handed pitching.

"Contrarian" Stack: Houston Astros vs Joey Cantillo (CLE LHP)

Why: Houston gets a plus matchup against the lefty Cantillo, and they own a healthy 104 wRC+ against lefties. Alvarez has been the best hitter in baseball and barely experiences a fall-off when he loses the platoon advantage. Pena and Walker have also been elite against lefties this season. Smith was great against lefties last season, and Matthews has been great this season.

"Contrarian" Stack: Athletics vs Walbert Urena (LAA RHP)

Why: Urena has been excellent at limiting power this season, with an elite 51.4% groundball rate and 5.7% barrel rate. He draws a tough test tonight in Sutter Health Park. The A's have a strong 106 wRC+ against righties, but lofty pricing will keep their best options lower-owned

MLB DFS Lineups: Core MLB DFS Hitters & Pitchers

The "Chalk" (Popular)

The "Pivot" (Low

Owned)

The Winning Logic
Ginn (SP, chalk)Urena (SP, lower owned)Both pitchers struggle with walks and induce a lot of groundballs, and they both have a tough assignment in Sutter Health Park. Ginn is one of the highest owned pitchers on the slate, while Urena is projected to be under 5%.
Pirates (Chalk)Astros (contrarian stack)Pena, Alvarez, and Walker are an elite trio at the top of the order, with each owning an ISO of at least .214 vs LHP. Cantillo has experienced a dip in strikeouts and has a walk rate of 11.5%.
Gonzales + Triolo (chalk)Pena + Walker (lower owned)Sugano has had more success against righties, and both Gonzales and Triolo have an ISO under .100. Pena and Walker both have an ISO above .200 vs LHP.
