The fantasy baseball injury update this week features Cole Ragans, Will Smith, and more. Be sure to read on to learn more about some notable MLB injuries ahead of this weekend’s games.
MLB Injury Report Update Ahead of This Weekend's Games
Cole Ragans and Will Smith headline the MLB injury report ahead of this weekend’s games, and while Smith will miss the next few games, a rehab assignment is nearing for the Kansas City ace. Anthony Santander is also nearing a rehab assignment, while Boston seems likely to be without Roman Anthony for the rest of the regular season, or at least the majority of what’s left in the 2025 season. Other names in this fantasy baseball injury update include Max Muncy, Shohei Ohtani, Christian Yelich, and Seth Lugo.
As you prepare to finalize your fantasy baseball lineups for the upcoming week, don’t forget to take a look at James Grande’s best waiver wire pickups for the week, and the newest episode of Caught Stealing with Joe Gallina and yours truly dropping soon!
MLB Week 24 Injury Report Update: Pitchers
Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Dodgers - Illness
Don’t fret over Ohtani. A little chest cold prevented him from starting on Wednesday, but he'll be back on the rubber on Monday against Colorado.
Cole Ragans, Kansas City Royals - Shoulder
The door is wide open for Ragans to make a rehab start over the weekend. Ragans hasn’t pitched since June 5 due to a rotator cuff strain.
Roki Sasaki, Los Angeles Dodgers - Shoulder
Sasaki worked up to 69 pitches across 5 IP in his last rehab start, but as Joe Gallina and I mentioned on the podcast, it seems more likely that when he returns to the big league club, more of his innings come as a multi-inning reliever, more so than a starter (barring injury, of course).
Spencer Arrighetti, Houston Astros - Elbow
Arrighetti’s elbow issue may not be overly serious (fingers crossed), but time’s a tickin’ on the season, making it hard for Arrighetti to return before the end of the regular season.
Seth Lugo, Kansas City Royals - Back
A back strain will send Lugo to the IL, and with his rough August, one could pose the question: How long has this been bothering him? Has it been some time?
MLB Week 24 Injury Report Update: Hitters
Will Smith, Los Angeles Dodgers - Hand
Oh, the joys of being a catcher. Smith took a foul tip off his right hand, and while the X-rays came back negative, he’ll likely miss the weekend series against Baltimore.
Roman Anthony, Boston Red Sox - Oblique
A left oblique strain will send Anthony to the injured list, with a timeline to return of 4-6 weeks, which seems pretty standard for oblique issues. He would need to be on the shorter end of that timeline to return before the regular season is over, and even the latter end of the timeline is well into the postseason.
Kyle Tucker, Chicago Cubs - Calf
Tucker is dealing with some tightness in his left calf and is expected to be re-evaluated today (Friday).
Anthony Santander, Toronto Blue Jays - Shoulder
We are officially on rehab assignment watch for Santander. The hope is that he can begin a rehab assignment next week, with the goal of logging a solid number of ABs before the end of the regular season.
Max Muncy, Los Angeles Dodgers - Oblique
Muncy began a rehab assignment on Thursday, and he went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers - Back
You’ll see Pat Murphy’s comment on Yelich’s back below, but it doesn’t seem overly serious, and Yelich’s absence doesn’t figure to be more than a couple of days at most.
