Unfortunately, Jordan Reed missed last week with a concussion, and for a second there, it seemed like he might be able to stay healthy. He’s questionable for this week and may not play. In some better news, however, the tight end position is making a comeback in terms of fantasy relevance. Rob Gronkowski is lethal with Tom Brady at the helm, while Jimmy Graham is looking the part out in Seattle. Hunter Henry looks like a future Pro Bowler and Gary Barnidge is finally starting to get more looks in Cleveland. This position is going to be interesting to watch on a weekly basis.
Here are the top 5 tight ends for Week 7 of the NFL season.
Rob Gronkowski @ PIT
This is a no-brainer if you ask me. He’s the best tight end in football and gets to go up against an average-at-best Pittsburgh defense. They’ve only allowed one touchdown to tight ends this season, but Gronk is lethal with Tom Brady at the helm. Keep in mind he caught seven passes on nine targets for 162 yards and a touchdown last week. Fire him up this week!
Hunter Henry @ ATL
I’m a huge fan of this guy and he’s going to continue to get plenty of looks in the San Diego offense. Even when Antonio Gates is fully healthy, this guy will continue to play because he’s a complete tight end. He’s received 12 targets over the past two weeks and he continues to get red zone opportunities. Henry is a TE1 against a Falcons defense who is allowing the fourth-most points to the position in 2016.
Travis Kelce vs. NO
Kelce trails only Jeremy Maclin on his team in targets, which gives him an excellent opportunity to produce against a lackluster New Orleans defense. The Saints have allowed a touchdown in each of their past two games against opposing tight ends and Kelce has scored twice in his past three games. Will both streaks continue? I think so.
Jimmy Graham @ ARI
Over the past few weeks, Graham has been the most dynamic asset in the Seattle aerial attack. He’s looking that stud tight end we saw during his time in New Orleans. In his last three games, he’s hauled in 18 passes on 26 targets for 302 yards with one touchdown. He’s a TE1 in all formats.
Julius Thomas vs. OAK
Oakland’s allowing the seventh-most fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends and quite frankly, they’ve struggled covering the position this season. Thomas hasn’t been great this season, but this is a great opportunity for his coming out party. He’s a low-end TE1 this week.
