Texas Rangers vs. New York Mets Predictions: Sunday, September 14th

As the Rangers and Mets both fight for positioning in their respective Wild Card races, let’s get some action on Sunday’s matchup. The starting pitchers in this game should anchor a lower-scoring contest.

Mets rookie starter Nolan McLean has been lights out since joining the rotation in August. The right-hander boasts a 1.42 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over 5 starts so far. He’s also allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in each outing. Plus, McLean has done this against some tougher lineups (Phillies twice, Mariners, Tigers).

Today, the talented prospect will face a Rangers offense with subpar numbers against right-handed pitching lately. Over the past two weeks vs. righties, Texas has a .207 batting average, 77 wRC+, and .278 wOBA in the split. It’s a favorable matchup at home for McLean, who’s pitched 13.1 scoreless innings at home thus far.

On the other side, Rangers starter Jacob Latz can limit the Mets’ lineup as well. The left-hander owns a 2.91 ERA overall this season while splitting time between the bullpen and rotation. As a starter, though, Latz boasts a 2.73 ERA over 6 starts. He also has a 1.93 ERA over his past 4 four outings since returning from injury last month.

Latz will take on a Mets offense with below-average splits vs. southpaws recently. In September, New York is hitting .285 wOBA (24th in MLB) and 85 wRC+ (24th) against left-handed pitching. The lineup also has a 27.9% K rate (27th) and 5.4% walk rate (27th) in the split this month.

Kansas City Royals vs. Philadelphia Phillies Predictions: Sunday, September 14th

The Royals have fallen fast in the AL Wild Card race. Kansas City is now 1-6 in its past 7 games, with losses in the first pair of matchups of this series in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Phillies are rolling. They’re 9-1 in the past 10 games and 20-8 since the beginning of August. Let’s back the home Phils, who look to extend their 6-game win streak today.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola brings in a rough 6.24 ERA as he’s been untrustworthy for much of the season. The right-hander has also been up and down since returning from the IL last month. However, the arrow might finally be pointing up for the veteran.

Nola tossed 6 shutout innings at home against the Mets last time out. He’s now had 3 straight solid starts at home. He can do it again with a favorable matchup here. Over the past week against right-handers, the Royals have a .168 BA (28th in MLB). They also have a .277 wOBA and 72 wRC+ in the split during September.

Meanwhile, KC starter Noah Cameron gets a tough matchup on the road. The left-hander has a solid 3.00 ERA this season, but his 4.22 xFIP and 4.14 FIP suggest negative regression. We’ve seen some of those shakier outings lately, too. Cameron has a 4.15 ERA and 5.01 FIP over his past 7 starts.

Notably, Cameron has struggled on the road recently. He’s given up 4+ runs in 3 of his last 5 road outings. Now he’ll face a red-hot Phillies offense that’s scored 6+ runs in 5 straight games coming into today. Philadelphia is also a top-tier lineup vs. lefties in September, with a .348 wOBA and 122 wRC+.

Let’s back the Phillies on Sunday. They’re 13-3 over their last 16 games, with 10 of those wins coming by 2+ runs.
